Castelo Branco brings together historic architecture, contemporary culture, traditional crafts and landscape. This offers a range of ways to plan your stay: from the Baroque Jardim do Paço Episcopal to the history of embroidery, nature trails and birdwatching.
Baroque and historic architecture
The Jardim do Paço Episcopal was laid out in the early 18th century at the behest of Bishop D. João de Mendonça. It is considered one of Portugal’s most original examples of Baroque architecture and a city landmark. Its Italian style is evident in several terraces connected by stairways, in avenues and themed paths, and in numerous granite statues. These include depictions of the Portuguese kings in chronological order. Seasonal opening hours apply: from April to September, 09:00 to 19:00; from October to March, 09:00 to 18:00. Check the current information before your visit.
The historic district is also shaped by its architectural history. It is rich in Portados Quinhentistas, while its urban layout has changed little. The reconstruction of the Convento da Graça and the enlargement of its church in the 17th and 18th centuries saw the construction of the church choir and a Baroque portal. At the Igreja de São Miguel, the Matriz de Castelo Branco, significant renovations in the 17th century determined the building’s current structure; its altars from that period feature paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira.
Culture and embroidery
The Centro de Cultura Contemporânea de Castelo Branco promotes and presents contemporary culture, encourages artistic creation and works to develop new audiences. The Museu Cargaleiro offers a different architectural focus: it comprises two connected buildings, the 18th-century Solar dos Cavaleiros and a contemporary building.
The Centro de Interpretação do Bordado takes visitors through the history and making of Bordado de Castelo Branco. The production process it presents ranges from sowing flax and raising silkworms to obtaining the raw materials, weaving, and the development of embroidery techniques and their symbolism. Since 2023, Castelo Branco has been a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. The Centro includes a museum area, a shop and the Oficina-Escola de Bordado de Castelo Branco. If you plan to visit and take part in activities at the Oficina-Escola, check the visiting arrangements and certification status in advance.
Nature and trails
Parque do Barrocal covers around 40 hectares of wild nature and is located within the UNESCO Global Geopark Naturtejo and the cross-border Tejo|Tajo Internacional Biosphere Reserve. Its facilities include seven viewpoints, geologically interesting formations, boardwalks and nature trails, a playground and a birdwatching centre. The park offers different ways to explore it through its geology, trails and birdwatching; for specific facilities, it is advisable to check what is currently available.
Parque Urbano de Castelo Branco has a different focus: its Lagoa features a large body of water with a pedestrian bridge. The surrounding green space has a picnic area, walking paths and cycle paths. This makes it easy to distinguish between two kinds of green space: the Barrocal’s landscape and geological features, and the water and paths of Parque Urbano.
Events and regional products
Nossa Senhora de Mércoles takes place on the third Tuesday after Easter Sunday, so the date changes from year to year. The annual Feira Sabores de Perdição highlights the importance, quality and tradition of local and regional products. Its dates and programme may change. If either event is a deciding factor in your trip, check the date for the year you plan to travel.
Regional products to try include honey, cured meats and Queijo de Castelo Branco, which is notable for its intense smell. Availability varies by producer and season. The Lagar de Rochas de Cima was restored to give visitors the chance to learn about the traditional olive oil production process. This method was widespread in Beira Baixa before more modern and industrialised methods were introduced. Check the local visiting arrangements before you travel.
