On a fortified hill between the Ceife and Taliscas streams, Castelo de Penamacor shapes the landscape. It stands at an altitude of 573 metres—a striking introduction to a place whose history can be read in its towers, churches and other buildings. Serra da Malcata and its protected natural environment are also defining features of the region.

Castle and Architectural History

Castelo de Penamacor, also known as Fortaleza de Penamacor, is classified as a National Monument. One of its distinctive structures is the Torre de Menagem: it has a regular square floor plan, and its elevated entrance required a removable ladder. From the tower, you can see Serra da Malcata. The castle grounds are also home to a Centro de Interpretação.

Other historic sites reveal different aspects of the area’s architectural heritage. The Antiga Casa da Câmara rests on the Porta da Vila. Its themes include local government in the medieval and modern periods, presented through documents and objects; videos cover the municipality’s natural and ethnographic heritage. Igreja de São Tiago is Penamacor’s parish church; its construction dates to the 16th century or earlier. Igreja da Misericórdia is built in the Manueline style and has four side altars.

Convento de Santo AntĂłnio was founded by Capuchin friars in 1571. The church and cloister were classified as a Monument of Public Interest on 27 March 2020. Inside the church, Baroque woodcarving adorns the main altar and pulpit. The digits 1565 are engraved on the capital of the Pelourinho de Penamacor. It is considered the only pillory in the district whose wrought-iron hooks still retain their rings.

Teatro Clube de Penamacor also tells the story of the town’s cultural history: it opened on 14 November 1912 with a performance of Camilo Castelo Branco’s “O Morgado de Fafe em Lisboa.” The historic theatre once had around 300 seats. A different focus awaits at Casa da Memória da Medicina Sefardita – Ribeiro Sanches. This museum area is dedicated to Portuguese Jewish and New Christian doctors, pharmacists and other people associated with the healing arts; one floor is dedicated to António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches. For panoramic views, the leafy Jardim da República offers a distinctive connection to the landscape.

Serra da Malcata: Protected Area and Trails

The Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata was established in 1981. It covers 16,348 hectares, with elevations ranging from 425 to 1,078 metres. The area is a natural habitat of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) and is home to about 218 vertebrate species. The protected area extends into the freguesias of Penamacor, Meimoa and MeimĂŁo, in the municipality of Penamacor, Castelo Branco District.

The ten-kilometre circular Rota da Vila (PR1-PNC) starts at the Museu Municipal. It leads to the “Miradouro da Casa do Ramalho” geosite and through the Mata Municipal, as well as towards the Minas do Palão. These are considered evidence of lead mining from the mid-20th century. The route is listed as taking an average of 3 hours and 30 minutes and having an easy difficulty level of 2. Route information, markings and conditions may change; check them locally before setting out.

Nautical Activities and December Traditions

Estação Náutica de Penamacor is officially recognised by the Portuguese network of nautical stations; recognition details may be updated. Nautical activities offered by tourism providers include canoeing, kayak tours, pedal-boat rentals and stand-up paddleboarding. Availability may vary by season.

A special December tradition is Vila Madeiro. Each year, young people from the municipality gather firewood; after Christmas dinner, the community gathers around the fire. The logs are brought to the churchyard and stacked there on 8 December. The Madeiro is lit on the night of 23–24 December. If you plan to include the tradition in your trip, check the dates and arrangements in advance, as programme details may vary.

The culinary scene also extends beyond Penamacor: Papas de carolo is recommended as a typical sweet treat to try in the wider region. Menus and tasting opportunities may vary.
