Adufe tambourines are a true symbol of Idanha-A-Nova’s local identity. It is fitting, then, that the municipality is a UNESCO Creative City of Music: here, music is part of the cultural identity as much as it is expressed through concerts and musical events.

Music and Cultural Heritage

The Idanhense Brass Band brings traditional and contemporary music together, giving people of all ages the opportunity to take part and experience it. The Fora do Lugar – Early Musics International Festival offers a different musical perspective. Since 2012, it has brought classical music and popular expression together in unusual venues. If you are interested in music, you can encounter a range of approaches here: a local tradition, making music together, and a festival that brings different forms of expression together.

The town’s history can also be traced through specific architectural and heritage features. Idanha-A-Nova was founded around a castle built in 1187 on the orders of Gualdim Pais. The Centro Cultural Raiano coordinates research, preservation and interpretation of the municipality’s heritage. It has several exhibition spaces as well as an auditorium seating around 260 people, and presents performing arts productions alongside museum programmes.

Landscape and Nature

Parts of the municipality of Idanha-A-Nova lie within the Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional. The municipality also holds UNESCO recognition as a Biosphere Reserve, among other designations. One striking feature of the landscape is the Falha do Ponsul: it runs from Serrinha near Arneiro to Monfortinho, continues into Spain and extends for more than 120 kilometres. This scale offers a geological perspective on the landscape, distinct from the town’s cultural attractions.

For a short hike, the PR 1 IDN – Rota dos Abutres is designated as a short route. At the Barragem Marechal Carmona, recreation and leisure are possible in harmony with nature. The Idanha-A-Nova Nautical Station lists activities such as canoeing, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, canyoning, white-water activities, activities in bathing areas and sport fishing. If a particular water activity is essential to your visit, check in advance whether it is available on your dates.

From Termas de Monfortinho, you can explore the region through nature tourism, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, birdwatching and orienteering. These options cater to different interests: those who enjoy exploring on foot can choose between the short Rota dos Abutres and hiking, one of the activities listed from Termas; those interested in observing nature can consider birdwatching as another way to explore the area.

History, Pilgrimage and Local Cuisine

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Almortão combines religious tradition with a distinctive architectural detail: the main chapel and altar feature 18th-century tiles. The sanctuary is a site of pilgrimage; the most widely attended pilgrimage takes place fifteen days after Easter Sunday. If you would like to plan your trip around this pilgrimage, check the date for the relevant year.

The Minas de Segura are a reminder of Segura’s historic mining district. Tungsten, tin, gold, zinc and lead were extracted there. The Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa IGP is another local culinary highlight, produced in every parish in the municipality. Cabrito assado no forno is also associated with Idanha-A-Nova: the recipe for this dish has been passed down from generation to generation. A locally produced food and a culinary tradition handed down over time each reflect the character of the area in their own way.
