The PR1 Pelas Margens do Rio Angueira runs along the river between S. Joanico, Serapicos and Angueira. The trail passes a medieval bridge, watermills and stone-slab footbridges; it also winds through lush riverside woodland and dense forest of oaks and strawberry trees.
Trails between the river and the cultural landscape
The PR4 Trilho do Castelo de Algoso offers a different perspective. A detour passes through the Natura 2000 site Sítio de Importância Comunitária dos Rios Sabor e Maçãs, following the Rio Angueira, which has been preserved in a wild state. The route also includes a section along a medieval paved road to the medieval bridge of Algoso.
The PR2 Pelas Ladeiras do Rio Sabor passes through olive groves, native scrubland, farmland, grain fields and vineyards; its landscapes also include olive groves in the Rio Sabor valley. The routes therefore differ in their described highlights: PR1 follows riverbanks, bridges, mills and riverside woodland; PR4 passes through a protected river landscape and along a historic paved road; and PR2 runs through farmland and a cultural landscape.
Near Argozelo, the Rota dos Mineiros passes the preserved Galeria do Gato and Parque Mineiro. With its extensive collection of equipment, the park is considered an open-air museum of industrial archaeology. In Serapicos, the Estação da Biodiversidade is a short educational trail with nine information panels. It focuses on observing biodiversity, particularly butterflies and dragonflies.
Discover nature at PINTA
PINTA serves as a reception, information and visitor management centre for the entire Rios Sabor e Maçãs Natura 2000 site. Its permanent exhibition covers the slopes of the Rio Sabor, wet meadows, forests and rivers, as well as farmland and villages. This offers several perspectives on the landscape, from natural habitats to the settlements within the area.
The PINTA area also includes the Escola do Lobo Ibérico, an educational and information centre about the importance and behaviour of the Iberian wolf and the historical relationship between people and wolves. The CALP do Burro de Miranda focuses on other animals: the facility, which is part of the Parque Ibérico de Natureza e Aventura de Vimioso, offers visits to its stables and walks accompanied by Burros de Miranda.
Traces of history and craftsmanship
Finds at Cabeço da Atalaia, above Vimioso, provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in the region. Vimioso received its first Carta de Foral in the 16th century. The Pelourinho was probably erected after the Carta de Foral was granted and the Concelho was established in 1516 by King D. Manuel I.
The Igreja Matriz de Vimioso, also called Igreja de São Vicente, is a Mannerist church dedicated to Saint Vincent and classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The Castelo de Algoso is also considered one of the most significant medieval fortresses in eastern Trás-os-Montes. The Museu Etnográfico da Casa da Cultura de Vimioso offers another perspective on the region's history and has been recognised as a Museu de Território da Região Norte by the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Norte.
The Centro de Interpretação dos Pombais Tradicionais explains the forms, uses and construction techniques of traditional rural dovecotes. From there, a signposted circular walk leads through Uva, where more than 40 traditional dovecotes can be seen. The walk and the centre offer different perspectives: one focuses on the buildings in the landscape, while the other explains their design and use.
