In Alfândega da Fé, you’ll find two very different ways to discover history: the Roteiro da História takes you through old streets, past a heraldic house, religious buildings and the Torre do Relógio. The Roteiro da Arte Pública draws attention to sculptures, ceramic painting and graffiti in public spaces around the town. Here, you can encounter both historic architectural forms and art in public spaces.

Historic traces and art in the town

The Torre do Relógio probably already existed in the 16th century, but its construction history and original purpose remain unclear. The restored tower houses the photo exhibition “Quando o relógio voltou a dar horas”. Check what visiting options are available before you go. At the Casa da Cultura Mestre José Rodrigues, a more recent chapter in cultural life is reflected in a distinctive building: the house opened in September 2004 and was designed by the renowned architect Alcino Soutinho.

Archaeological sites also offer a glimpse into different layers of history. The heritage includes the Castro, the necropolis and the Nossa Senhora dos Anúncios sanctuary. These include a fortified settlement from the Iron Age, later inhabited by the Romans, as well as an early medieval burial necropolis. The Iron Age, Roman occupation and early medieval burial history stand side by side here as distinct chapters.

The Sete Sóis Sete Luas cultural network includes 33 cities in 13 countries across the Mediterranean and the Lusophone world. Alfândega da Fé is the only municipality in northern Portugal to host the international festival. This cultural setting adds a perspective beyond the region to your discoveries here.

Sacred sites and their stories

The original chapel of Santo Antão da Barca stood on the right bank of the Sabor River and gave rise to a major pilgrimage of regional importance. The relocated Santuário de Santo Antão da Barca houses a small museum featuring paintings, a photo exhibition, a video installation about the sanctuary’s relocation and a collection of votive offerings. From the relocated sanctuary, you can look out over the Sabor lakes and the surrounding mountains. This place brings together religious tradition, keepsakes and views of the landscape.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora de Jerusalém is a Neoclassical chapel with a round-arched portal; traces of paintings remain inside. To get there, take the EN 215 from Alfândega da Fé towards Vila Flor. About five kilometres beyond Alfândega da Fé, a municipal road branches off towards Sendim da Serra; this is followed by a further four kilometres of unpaved road. This final section is therefore an important part of planning your route.

Landscape and trails around Alfândega da Fé

The municipality’s landscape includes the Serra de Bornes and the Sabor Valley; the Vilariça Valley is also within the municipality. The town of Alfândega da Fé sits on a hill at an elevation of about 575 metres. From the Santuário de Santo Antão da Barca, you can see the Sabor lakes and the surrounding mountains. These landscape features offer different points of reference without combining them into a single viewpoint.

The trails also differ in their shape and character. The Trilho da Serra de Bornes is an approximately nine-kilometre marked and signposted circular hiking trail of moderate difficulty. It passes through chestnut groves; along the way, you may spot squirrels, rabbits, wild boar, reptiles and various butterfly species, among other wildlife. The Trilho Vilares da Vilariça runs along the southern slope of the Serra de Bornes and offers panoramic views of the Vilariça Valley. The Trilho das Capelas, in turn, is a linear PR hiking trail of moderate to high difficulty, marked and signposted in accordance with international guidelines. When choosing a route, compare the approximate length and circular layout of one trail with the linear route and stated difficulty of another. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Parque Micológico de Alvazinhos includes entrance areas, the main trails, a mycological interpretation centre and recreational areas around ponds. Alongside the hiking trails, you can also explore a site with different areas and an interpretation centre, offering further ways to experience the landscape.

Festivals and local products

The Festa da Cereja in Alfândega da Fé has a history spanning more than 30 years and showcases local products and the municipality’s culture. The stalls offer handicrafts and local products, with a particular emphasis on cherries. If you’d like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the event dates.
