Vimioso offers several distinct themes for a trip: a 26.5-kilometre circular hike, landscape interpretation at PINTA, a Mannerist religious building and thermal offerings. When planning, it helps to first choose your main interest: nature, regional history, architecture or thermal offerings.

Hiking and nature at PINTA

The Rota do Lobo-Ibérico is a 26.5-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts and ends at PINTA in Vimioso. It passes through the valleys of the Rio Maçãs and Rio Angueira within the cross-border Meseta Ibérica Biosphere Reserve. Before setting out, check the route infrastructure and trail conditions.

At PINTA, exhibitions and guided visits also explore themes related to nature. An exhibition by the Natura 2000 network provides information about the areas around the Sabor, Maçãs and Angueira rivers. There is also Vimioso’s interpretation point for the Rota da Terra Fria Transmontana. The interactive visit covers the five participating municipalities: Vimioso, Bragança, Miranda do Douro, Vinhais and Mogadouro. PINTA therefore offers insights into both river areas and a themed route involving several municipalities.

The visitor route at PINTA has been adapted for people with reduced mobility. A guided tour of the Rede Natura 2000 exhibition centre and 40-minute visits to the Burro de Miranda stables are included in the visitor programme year-round. Check in advance whether these visits are open to the public on your chosen date. The offerings involve different planning considerations: the circular trail has a stated distance, while the stable visit lasts 40 minutes.

Architecture and regional history

The Igreja Matriz de Vimioso is dedicated to the martyr São Vicente and is classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest). Its official classification describes it as a Mannerist religious building. The layout of the interior is also specific: the nave consists of five bays and is covered by a star vault. The bays structure the nave, while the star vault forms its upper covering.

The Núcleo Museológico de Vimioso traces the history of the region and the Concelho de Vimioso from the Romanisation period to the 20th century. Texts, images and a short film explore Vimioso, its geography and its surviving monuments. The museum also includes the Memorial da Mobilidade Transfronteiriça, Contrabando e Fiscalização. Visitors interested in the historical context will find a broad chronological perspective here; the Igreja Matriz complements this theme with a specific building whose architectural classification and features are identified.

Thermal offerings and planning

The Termas de Vimioso offer thermal treatments involving hydrotherapy and balneotherapy. The Circuito Vales de Vimioso includes a heated thermal-water pool, a sauna and a Turkish bath. If these offerings are important to your travel plans, check in advance on the current availability of treatments and facilities.

You can choose between different types of experiences: a circular hike through two river valleys, nature interpretation at PINTA, the history of the region, a Mannerist religious building, thermal treatments and bathing facilities. Check the relevant conditions before your trip for visits with specific timings and for the hiking route. The theme that matters most to you can also help guide your search for a hotel in Vimioso.
