Parambos brings together a church with a long history of construction, rock art whose date remains uncertain, and striking natural rock formations. These differences offer several focuses for planning a trip: the church’s architectural history, possible archaeological interpretations and the landscape can each be explored on their own.

Church and History in Parambos

The Igreja Matriz de São Bartolomeu de Parambos dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The year 1709, engraved above the portal, points to a restoration. The construction period and the year thus offer two distinct historical reference points: the church is dated to a span of two centuries, while the inscription marks a restoration.

The Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua (PNRVT) is also part of the area’s character. Within the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães, it covers 99 hectares in Parambos. This figure refers to the area in Parambos and adds a specific landscape dimension to the church’s history.

Rock Art at Fraga de Fonte Seixas

The rock art at Fraga de Fonte Seixas is interpreted as a possible ritual site. It may date from the Late Bronze Age or the Iron Age, but its dating requires further study. The interpretation is therefore tentative, and the date remains uncertain.

The motifs include horseshoes, circles, cup marks and several types of crosses. Particularly noteworthy are recurring groups of circular cup marks topped by crosses. The range of motifs thus includes both individual forms and recurring combinations.

Rock Formations and Local Tradition

The “Cadeira” de Nossa Senhora is a natural seat formed from rock and associated with a local legend. A natural tunnel runs beneath it between two large rock blocks. Beside the Cadeira is a rocking stone that can be moved with a deft touch.

Different natural features meet here: the rock shaped like a seat, the tunnel between the blocks and the movable stone. The local legend adds a traditional story to these geological features.

Landscape and Walking

The walking route between Parambos and Foz do Tua was the setting for an organised hike. During the hike, participants enjoyed views of the Douro slopes, traditional vineyard terraces and natural viewpoints. These landscape impressions are thus associated with a specific walk between the two named places.

A tourist map of Vale do Tua places Fonte de Seixas (Fraga das Ferraduras) in the Parambos–Castanheiro do Norte section. If you use this map reference to plan your trip, check that the map is up to date before setting out.

August Festivities and Travel Dates

The Feast of São Bartolomeu is celebrated in Parambos on 24 August. Noite dos Bombos is associated with 23 August. If you plan your trip around these dates, check the current festivities programme in advance.

Parambos offers several different reasons to visit: the architectural history of the Igreja Matriz, archaeological motifs whose dating remains uncertain, natural rock formations and a walk through the landscape. Which focus matters most to you may also influence your choice of travel dates.
