The Castelo de Ansiães includes an Alcáçova platform and a residential platform. Its remains document the medieval town’s urban structure. The range of themes in Carrazeda De Ansiães also extends beyond the castle: museums focus on wine and olive oil production, while hiking opportunities and viewpoints draw attention to the landscape. This offers a choice of different interests—medieval architecture, traditional production, or trails and scenic routes.
Castelo de Ansiães and CICA
The Church of S. Salvador in Castelo de Ansiães has a tympanum depicting Christ Pantocrator, considered one of the most important examples of Portuguese Romanesque art. This architectural detail complements a visit to the site with a specific example of Portuguese Romanesque art.
In the historic area of Carrazeda De Ansiães, the CICA, the Centro Interpretativo do Castelo de Ansiães, displays archaeological artefacts. Its museographic presentation focuses in particular on Castelo de Ansiães. Alongside the remains of the medieval town, visitors can therefore explore finds and their presentation in relation to the castle.
The CICA offers themed workshops and guided visits for schools or groups. As programme details may change, it is advisable to ask about the current offer in advance. The CICA also organises the “Circuito Turístico do Castelo e dos Moinhos” and the “Circuito Turístico do Castelo e Douro” as seasonal programmes. Check whether these programmes are currently running before making plans.
The history of wine and olive oil in the museums
The Museu da Memória Rural is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the tangible and intangible heritage of Carrazeda De Ansiães. The main building explains the entire wine cycle: from establishing a vineyard and the agricultural work involved to the grape harvest and winemaking. The Núcleo Museológico do Azeite, a museum section in Lavandeira, offers a different perspective on production. It presents traditional olive oil making in an olive mill with a central screw press. The two subjects differ both in their products and in how they are presented: here, the stages of the wine cycle; there, the olive oil mill with its central press.
Hiking trails and viewpoints
The Rota dos Miradouros is an official visitor route with seven viewpoints in the Carrazeda De Ansiães area. By contrast, the Igreja de São Brás in Castanheiro provides a specific reference point for the PR3 Trilho da Foz do Tua: the trail starts and ends there. These details answer different planning questions—the Rota is centred on its seven viewpoints, while the PR3 has a defined start and end point. Check trail conditions before setting out; access details may change if the route is revised.
A project completed on 30 November 2023 envisaged a network of five short hiking trails for the municipality of Carrazeda De Ansiães. This is a separate planning stage from the information about the named routes and viewpoints.
Rivers, wine and rural places
In FozTua, in the municipality of Carrazeda De Ansiães, visitors can enjoy views of the Douro and Tua rivers. The FozTua winery offers guided visits followed by a wine tasting; advance booking may be required. Each tasting also includes a visit to the vineyard. This is weather-dependent, and transport there is not guaranteed. If you plan a visit, take into account both the weather dependency and the fact that transport is not guaranteed.
The restored watermills of Ribeiro do Coito are near Vilarinho da Castanheira, in a rural, park-like recreational area where visitors can experience the surrounding nature. The windmill of Carrazeda De Ansiães offers a different connection to the history of milling: it was built in the early 20th century and is believed to have operated for about a decade.
