Five square towers on an oval upper fortification: the walled town of Ansiães reveals its history through striking forms. A second wall is more than 600 metres long. Together, the fortifications give the place a distinct architectural character and offer a glimpse into the region’s medieval history.
Walls, Monuments and Granite
Ansiães received successive charters from the 11th century onwards and developed into the centre of an extensive medieval territory. The Romanesque Church of São Salvador is also part of this historical picture. Located within Ansiães, it appears to date from the 12th century—a date that should be understood as an estimate.
Older traces take a different form: the Anta de Zedes is a megalithic burial monument. Eight supporting stones and a capstone form a polygonal chamber. The Fraga pintada do Cachão da Rapa is located on a vertical granite outcrop and has been classified as a National Monument since 1943. Granite shapes the landscape around Carrazeda De Ansiães; suggested places to visit also include prehistoric remains such as rock paintings and well-preserved dolmens.
A natural curiosity is the Pedra Bulideira in Ribalonga: a large, rounded boulder that moves when touched but stays in place. In the region, built fortifications and burial monuments stand alongside a landscape in which granite itself becomes a defining feature.
Rural Heritage and the History of the Valley
The Museu da Memória Rural preserves and presents the tangible and intangible rural heritage of the municipality of Carrazeda De Ansiães. Its displays introduce visitors to traditional activities such as basket weaving, baking, cheesemaking, shepherding and cooperage. These themes offer insight into different forms of rural work, telling the story of the region through more than just its buildings.
The Centro Interpretativo do Vale do Tua, located at Foz Tua station in Carrazeda De Ansiães, offers another perspective. Its presentation is divided into three main themes: the valley, the Tua railway line and the dam. The section on the valley uses a time capsule that spans several millennia—from the valley’s geological and natural features to its settlement. In this way, landscape, infrastructure and human history are presented as different perspectives.
In Lavandeira, the Núcleo Museológico do Azeite shows how traditional olive oil was produced in an oil mill with a central screw press. Visitors interested in the processing of local products will find a practical, technical perspective here. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.
Mills are also worth discovering: the restored watermills, Moinhos de Água do Ribeiro do Coito, are located near Vilarinho da Castanheira in a rural recreation area. The Moinho de Vento de Carrazeda de Ansiães windmill was built in the early 20th century, restored in 2012 and incorporated into an educational, cultural and heritage programme that includes guided visits. Check in advance whether visits are currently available. At Foz-Tua Wine House, visitors can taste and buy products made in Carrazeda De Ansiães; check before travelling whether this offer is still available.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The key details for the PR3 CRZ Trilho de Foz-Tua are more specific: the easy route is 3.5 kilometres long and takes about 50 minutes to walk. Check the conditions for this route before setting out. You can plan around two different reference points: a trail with two named viewpoints, and a short route with a stated distance, difficulty level and walking time.
