Alvito combines festivals held on specific dates with historic buildings and a townscape characteristic of the Alentejo. This offers different ways to plan a trip: around a particular event date, or around a cultural stay focused on architecture and the character of the town. The white houses add the perspective of the town as a whole to the view of individual religious buildings.

Festivals and When to Visit

The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, also known as the Festival of the Vila, takes place every year on the last weekend of August in honour of the patron saint.

The Feira dos Santos, also called the Feira dos Frutos Secos, takes place in Alvito on November 1. The ProcissĂŁo do Senhor Morto takes place on Good Friday and is one of the most solemn processions in Alvito. This gives you three different dates to consider when choosing when to travel: the last weekend of August, November 1 and Good Friday. The events differ both in their form and in when they take place. If you want to plan your stay around a particular event, you can take its date into account when making your plans. The Portuguese name roughly means a market for dried fruit and nuts.

Architectural History and Townscape

The Capela de Nossa Senhora das Candeias was built in the 16th century; its tilework dates from the 18th century. The Igreja da Misericórdia was also built in the 16th century, on land adjacent to the chapel. Together, these details provide a precise picture: both religious buildings date from the same century, while the chapel’s tilework represents a later period. The construction dates, furnishings and spatial relationship between the two buildings can thus be clearly distinguished.

The houses also shape Alvito’s townscape: they are painted white and give the town a distinctive character typical of the Alentejo. This places individual historic buildings and the appearance of the town as a whole alongside one another as different perspectives. If you are interested in architectural history, you can take both scales into account when choosing a cultural focus.

Plan Your Route and Accommodation

The PR3 – Rota de Santa Luzia begins and ends at the Ermida São Sebastião in the Rossio de Alvito. The route therefore starts and finishes at the same named location, giving it a clear geographical reference point. When planning, you can note the route name and its start and end points together, without equating the route with the festival or architecture themes.

If you are travelling for a festival, check the specific event date before booking. If you want architecture or the townscape to shape your stay, plan instead around that cultural focus.
