Oliveira do Bairro combines historic buildings and municipal cultural offerings with natural sites, birdwatching and Bairrada cuisine. To choose the focus of your trip, consider a simple question: should your stay be shaped primarily by culture, landscape or local produce? The museums in Bustos, Troviscal and Palhaça also each explore their own themes.
Discover history and culture
The Biblioteca Municipal de Oliveira do Bairro is housed in a building that once served as a granary for the Dukes of Lafões. Today, it offers a multipurpose room and an exhibition space, as well as access to local reference materials, computers and the internet. This place thus brings together its former use as a granary and its current municipal services.
The Antiga Casa da Câmara e Cadeia de Oliveira do Bairro may have been built in the 16th century and is still known as “Cadeia Velha.” The Igreja Matriz de Oliveira do Bairro dates from the 17th century; its façade and tower were built in the late 19th century. Inside, it features Baroque, gilded wooden altarpieces. The Quartel das Artes is also among Oliveira do Bairro’s notable cultural attractions for visitors.
The Radiolândia – Museu do Rádio in Bustos, Oliveira do Bairro, is devoted exclusively to radio and is based on Manuel Silva’s private collection. In Troviscal, the Museu de Etnomúsica da Bairrada preserves the musical heritage of the Bairrada community. Its collections include musical instruments, manuscripts, photographic records, oral history accounts and textiles. Visitors can also see the restoration, cleaning and treatment workshop, the documentary research centre and storage areas.
The Museu Diocesano de S. Pedro da Palhaça features exhibitions on sacred art and ethnography. On display are regional clothing, agricultural implements, ceramics and porcelain. The different collections each offer a distinct perspective on the region’s music, everyday culture and sacred art.
Nature and birdwatching
The Vale do Cértima around Oliveira do Bairro is associated with white storks and a diverse birdlife. One specific birdwatching opportunity is at Parque do Carreiro Velho: it lies within the Ria de Aveiro Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance, in a wet meadow landscape along the Rio Cértima. The park is home to numerous waterbirds, and two viewing points make them easier to observe.
Other green spaces have different features. Parque da Pateira lies on the banks of the Rio Levira and has a bar and a children’s playground. Parque da Fonte Bebe e Vai-te has an artificial lake and agricultural equipment on display. Its other facilities and features include waterbirds, a children’s playground, barbecue areas and tables.
Bairrada: cuisine and wines
Bairrada’s culinary traditions include Leitão da Bairrada, traditionally cooked in a wood-fired oven, Bairrada wine and local sparkling wines. Quinta da Laboeira is a family-run business in Oliveira do Bairro that produces wines and sparkling wines. You can arrange a tasting of one of the estate’s white wines, red wines and sparkling wines there. Confirm visiting times with Quinta da Laboeira in advance.
A September 2021 article described the range at the Mercado Municipal de Oliveira do Bairro as including fruit, flowers, cured meats, sweet pastries, bread and horticultural produce.
Events and activities
Since 2018, the Carnaval de Oliveira do Bairro has been held on “domingo magro,” the Sunday immediately before Carnival Sunday. Associations and groups from across the municipality take part in particular numbers. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your chosen year.
The Parque Desportivo Municipal de Oliveira do Bairro includes a municipal tennis and padel school. “Oliveira do Bairro – Trilhos na Natureza” has also been held on several occasions. Alongside culture and nature, sport and recurring events therefore offer different reasons to visit.
