Raiva brings together industrial history, religious traditions and striking landscapes. The Trilho do Mineiro circular trail passes through the Couto Mineiro do Pejão and Raiva; at Monte de São Domingos, deep valleys carved by the Arda and Douro rivers shape the landscape. The Igreja Matriz de Raiva adds Baroque architecture to these impressions. When planning your visit, you face a specific choice: should your focus be mining history, scenery or the traditions associated with São Domingos?
Industrial history on the Trilho do Mineiro
The Trilho do Mineiro is a circular trail through the Couto Mineiro do Pejão that passes through Raiva. It also follows some former routes along which locomotives transported coal from the mines to the Rio Douro. The trail thus brings together two aspects of mining history: the mines and the former transport of coal to the river. These routes give the trail a tangible link to the industrial past; its name alone does not tell the whole story of the route.
Another trail with its own character is the São Domingos da Serra pilgrimage route, designed to be travelled on foot. In comparison with the Trilho do Mineiro, their stated features differ: the Trilho is a circular trail linked to former coal transport routes, while the pilgrimage route is specifically designed for walking.
Viewpoints and river scenery
Monte de São Domingos is a natural viewpoint surrounded by deep valleys through which the Arda and Douro rivers flow. PP 07 offers a different panorama: from this route, you can see the Rio Douro and the Serra da Boneca. PP 07 starts at the Igreja Matriz de Raiva.
These offer two distinct perspectives on the landscape: at Monte de São Domingos, the focus is on the viewpoint and deep river valleys; on PP 07, it is on the panoramas of the Douro and the Serra da Boneca. The route begins at a named building, while the Monte is classed as a viewpoint. This distinction helps you associate the landscapes with their respective places and routes.
The Igreja Matriz de Raiva: Baroque architecture and hillside setting
The Igreja Matriz de Raiva is a religious building in the Baroque style. Its earliest known mention dates from 1062. The year refers to the mention, while the Baroque style describes the building’s architecture: these offer different perspectives on the church, and the date should not be understood as its construction year.
The church stands on a steep hillside amid woodland and agricultural terraces. The hillside, woodland and terraces shape its surroundings, while the Baroque style describes the building itself. PP 07 also starts at the Igreja Matriz. The church therefore has an architectural and historical connection to the local landscape, as well as serving as the starting point for this route.
The procession and Romaria a São Domingos da Serra
The procession tradition from the Nossa Senhora das Amoras chapel to the summit of the Serra de São Domingos is still maintained. The Romaria a São Domingos da Serra takes place in São Domingos da Serra, in the União de Freguesias Raiva, Pedorido e Paraíso. The tradition also includes families having a picnic in the Serra after Mass.
The two customs have different emphases: the procession goes from the chapel to the summit, while the family picnic follows the Mass. Thus both the religious journey and the time spent together as a community are part of the Romaria’s cultural significance. The São Domingos da Serra pilgrimage route is also designed to be travelled on foot; the procession tradition and the design of the pilgrimage route are distinct aspects of local walking and religious culture.
