Fornos brings together river history and routes through the parish: at the confluence of the Rio Paiva and the Douro, Lugar do Castelo was an old river port. The PR 1 CPV “Ilha dos Amores” starts and ends at Cais do Castelo, next to Ilha do Castelo. These points of reference can help you plan your stay around a particular theme. If you are looking for accommodation in Fornos, you can consider whether you would prefer to explore the river landscape and hiking trails or focus on historical and religious sites.
River landscapes and history on the Douro
Ilha do Castelo is the only island along the Portuguese stretch of the Douro and is popularly known as Ilha dos Amores. Archaeological investigations on the island uncovered remains of a 15th-century hermitage. Here, the island’s distinctive setting in the river and a specific archaeological find come together. Lugar do Castelo adds the story of an old river port at the mouth of the Paiva where it meets the Douro. The two places offer different perspectives: the island represents the Douro landscape, while Lugar do Castelo reflects the river’s historical use as a port.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The PR 1 CPV “Ilha dos Amores” follows rural and traditional paths through much of the parish of Fornos. It passes through the area of Capela de Santo António and by Largo Paroquial, with the Velho Cruzeiro de Fornos. Várzea de Fornos is one of the parish’s most beautiful landscapes. The trail also passes the former Leirós soft-drink factory. Igreja de São Pelágio de Fornos can be seen from the trail. The sites have different connections to the route: some are along it or reached by it, while the church is visible from the trail. Trail conditions may vary; check the current situation before setting out.
PP01 – Fornos offers a different kind of addition: an optional 1.8-kilometre extension lets you visit the rapids on the Rio Paiva. Another optional extension of the same length lets you visit the abandoned mill at Varzielas. This gives you a choice of different destinations: the river rapids or a mill described as abandoned. The length of each extension is a useful point of reference if you want to plan your hike around your chosen destination.
Religious heritage and historic buildings
São Pelágio is the patron saint of the parish of Fornos. You can also encounter religious heritage on the PR 1 CPV: Capela de Santo António, the Velho Cruzeiro, and Igreja de São Pelágio de Fornos, visible from the trail. The archaeologically discovered remains of the hermitage on Ilha do Castelo add evidence dating to the 15th century. These religious connections range from a patron saint to specific chapels, crosses, and historic remains.
Quinta da Cardia and the settlement of Castelo offer further points of reference for a history-focused visit. The quinta appears to have existed since the 15th century. In the historic settlement of Castelo, you can see some 19th-century houses. These dates point to different periods: the houses date to the 19th century, while the quinta and the discovered hermitage remains date to the 15th century. Together with the former LeirĂłs factory and the abandoned mill at Varzielas, they offer various connections to building and industrial history, though they do not all have the same status or relationship to the hiking trails.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests
If you want to include historic sites beyond the trails, you can also consider the houses in the settlement of Castelo and Quinta da Cardia. This lets you tailor your search for hotels in Fornos to the discoveries that matter to you during your stay, without assuming a particular walking time or order.
