Two naves, a main structure possibly dating from the 17th century, and alterations made particularly in the 18th century make the Igreja Paroquial de Fermedo a multilayered record of local history. Added to these are Roman inscriptions, monuments and traditional feast days. Those considering Fermedo as a destination for cultural and historical discoveries can explore its architectural history and local traditions as distinct areas of interest.
The Church and Roman Traces
The Igreja Paroquial de Fermedo has two naves. Its main structure possibly dates from the 17th century; the church underwent several alterations over the centuries, particularly in the 18th century. The 1755 earthquake partially damaged it. This building therefore brings together a possible early date, later changes and a specific instance of historical damage.
Inside are a baptismal font and four altars. The epitaph in the church commemorates Laetus, who came from Aviobriga or Avobriga; the inscription possibly dates from the 2nd century AD. Outside the church is the Epígrafe Romana de Fermêdo, a Roman funerary slab made of pink marble.
Monuments and Local History
The Pelourinho de Cabeçais is integrated into the staircase of the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde. The year 1275 refers to the Charter of Fermedo; 1932 marks the installation of the pelourinho at its present location. The two dates have different associations: one commemorates the charter, while the other relates to the monument’s location.
The Capela de Cela also has a traditional origin story: it began as a simple hermitage belonging to a member of a religious order. The Casa do Castelo stands at a site where, according to local tradition, a Moorish castle once stood. The Domus Municipalis building now serves as the Casa da Cultura. These sites bring together themes ranging from religious architectural history and local traditions to the present-day cultural use of a building.
The dates refer to different things: the possible dating of the inscription concerns its creation, 1275 refers to the Charter of Fermedo, and 1932 to the installation of the pelourinho at its present location. Alongside historical dates, they thus offer insights into the area’s legal and architectural history.
Feast Days and Market Traditions
Traditional feast dates in Cabeçais include the feast in honour of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, traditionally celebrated on 15 August. The Feira dos Treze is traditionally held monthly on the 13th; according to tradition, the Feira das Debulhas takes place annually on 13 July. Annual pilgrimages in honour of the local patron saint are also recorded in Cela. Check the current programme locally before planning a specific trip.
The traditional role of Fermedo’s fairs includes selling produce grown mainly in the area and its surroundings. Livestock has been sold at the Feira das Debulhas for a long time; the current range of goods may vary. For trip planning, local history and event dates are distinct: buildings and inscriptions provide the cultural focus, while you can plan around festivals and markets once you have confirmed the date.
