Arouca offers several ways to explore the destination: a route just under 11 kilometres long that can be covered on foot or by bicycle, a museum featuring natural and cultural history, and a striking monastery heritage. There are also events with their own distinct character. When choosing where to go, you can therefore consider whether outdoor routes, local history or a festival should be the focus of your stay.

Routes around Arouca

The Ecovia do Arda is just under 11 kilometres long and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. It begins at Parque da Feira in Vila de Arouca. Along the route, information panels cover the geology, biodiversity and history of this part of the Arouca Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The combination of a route and informative themes makes the Ecovia a clear choice for travellers who want to combine exercise with geology, nature and history.

The eight-kilometre-long Passadiços do Paiva also run nearby, between Areinho and Espiunca. This gives you two routes with different distances to help plan your visit: the Ecovia do Arda is just under 11 kilometres long, while the Passadiços do Paiva is eight kilometres. Walking and cycling are specifically mentioned for the Ecovia.

Museum and monastery history

The Museu Municipal de Arouca preserves the memories and traditions of a population with a distinctly rural character. Its subject matter also includes the municipality’s biodiversity and its archaeological and geological heritage. The museum has areas for permanent exhibitions and an area for temporary exhibitions. This combination of subjects offers different perspectives on Arouca, from the lives of its people to natural and geological history.

The Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Arouca stands on the main road in Vila de Arouca. It has been documented since the 10th century and was used exclusively as a convent for women from 1154 onwards. Renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries profoundly changed the monastery. The Igreja do Mosteiro de Arouca contains paintings, sculptures and richly gilded wood carvings; the reliquary urn of Santa Mafalda is also located there. In this way, the monastery’s early history and later architectural changes meet the specific details of its interior.

Another religious building is the Capela da Misericórdia. It was built at the request of the faithful; its dating to 1612 is based on an inscription. Calvário comprises six 17th-century crosses that form part of a Way of the Cross, and offers expansive views over Arouca. Casa dos Malafaias consists of sections of buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, built mostly of granite. As the property is private, it can only be viewed from the outside. These places thus differ both in their history and in what visitors can access.

Festivals with different focuses

For four days, the Feira das Colheitas brings the centre of Arouca to life with markets, concerts, exhibitions, agricultural competitions, ethnographic parades and livestock parades, folklore, activities for children and gastronomy. It began in 1944 to highlight agriculture and promote agricultural activity. Its programme thus combines agricultural themes with culture and entertainment.

The Festival da Castanha takes place every year on the last weekend of October. Its programme includes food areas, a fair for handicrafts and regional products, workshops, chestnut-roasting events, hiking and cycling activities, and mushroom walks. Individual activities may vary from one edition to another. In contrast, the festival’s chestnuts and regional products give it an autumnal focus, while the Feira das Colheitas features agriculture and a broader programme of events in the town centre. This allows you to distinguish between the festivals’ different profiles and the Festival da Castanha’s fixed October weekend when planning your trip.
