Stare Czarnowo offers two distinct ways to plan a trip: a local history dating back to the Middle Ages and a 9 km cycle path connecting the town with Kołbacz and Szczecin. Its historical landmarks range from the early name Cirnowe to the Cistercians, church and market. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the town’s historical development or cycling will shape your stay.
Local History in Several Stages
Stare Czarnowo was first mentioned under the name Cirnowe in a document dated to 1179–1181. In 1226, Duke Barnim gave the town to the Cistercians of Kołbacz. The mention of the name and the donation refer to two different historical events: one concerns the early name of the town, the other its transfer to the order. Several decades separate these events, making it easy to distinguish the early mention from the later monastic history.
Before 1326, the Cistercians turned Stare Czarnowo into a monastic grange, or monastic estate. This adds a later development to the donation: 1226 marks the transfer to the order, while the grange reflects the subsequent form of land use. When placing the town’s medieval history in context, you can therefore distinguish between an event involving ownership and its later function as an estate.
Around the middle of the 13th century, Stare Czarnowo was granted market rights, known in Latin as forum liberum. The town was also a parish village by the 13th century at the latest. Market status and parish status describe different aspects of the town, even though both belong to the same broad period. A fair was historically held on the basis of the market rights. It began on 11 November; if that day fell on a Saturday or Sunday, it began the following Monday. The rule about the day of the week adds a specific detail about how the market operated at the time.
The history of the church follows its own timeline. The first church in Stare Czarnowo was built in the southern part of the village at the end of the 12th century. It was destroyed by fire in 1531 and rebuilt in the 16th century. The first church building predates the donation of 1226, while the fire and reconstruction belong to a later period. The construction, monastic development and market history thus form three distinct threads in the town’s history.
Cycle Path and Trip Planning
A 9 km cycle path connects Stare Czarnowo with Kołbacz and Szczecin. It offers a different point of reference from the historical dates: rather than a timeline, it is a route between three named places. You can take this into account as a separate cycling option when planning your trip. If cycling will shape your stay, the route gives you a concrete starting point for your plans; the town’s history offers a different focus.
