In Choszczno, historic buildings and memorial sites sit alongside routes suited to a range of cycling interests. The routes mentioned range from a marked 16.7-km trail to an 83-km route. At the same time, the church, defensive walls and individual monuments tell stories of different eras. This makes it possible to see active exploration and culture as two distinct ways to experience the trip.

Cycling routes by length and course

The marked Green Route is 16.7 km long and runs from Choszczno to Recz. The Trasa Pojezierzy Zachodnich is a different scale: its 20-km section runs from the southern to the northern boundary through the municipality of Choszczno. This section is part of a 420-km route stretching from the border with the Federal Republic of Germany to Biały Bór. The municipality’s main tourist cycling route is “Rowerem po Ziemi Choszczeńskiej,” which is 83 km long.

The details highlight a useful distinction: for the Trasa Pojezierzy Zachodnich, the section within the municipality and the length of the entire route are given side by side. By contrast, 16.7 km and 83 km refer to the lengths of the individual routes named. When choosing, you can therefore consider both the specific distance and the route described.

Medieval traces and the town’s history

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Choszczno was built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 14th century. The church contains a ceramic relief of the Tree of Jesse depicting the genealogy of Christ, as well as a 15th-century epitaph for Mayor Mikołaj Rebentisch. The building’s history and its furnishings offer different points of interest: the age of the church and the commemoration of a specific historical figure.

Choszczno’s defensive walls also date from the 14th and 15th centuries. At the corner of Piastowska and Wolności streets, a Gothic tower belonging to the Barbakan outwork of the Stone Gate complex has been preserved. More recent buildings and commemorative features include the water tower, built in 1903, and the Aleja Gwiazd Kolarstwa Polskiego, unveiled in 2002. Together, these dated sites and structures span the Middle Ages to more recent town history.

Collections, park paths and Lake Klukom

The Muzeum Ziemi Choszczeńskiej preserves several hundred movable artefacts dating from the Stone Age to the present day. The items currently on display may change. The museum can be visited only after a visit time has been confirmed in advance, so arrange your appointment before your visit.

The original layout of the walking paths has been preserved in Moniuszki Park. Some paths may have changed, so check their condition before your visit. Miejska Góra in Choszczno is a walking area with running trails; some of its facilities may also change. Checking their condition will help you take this information into account when planning.

Lake Klukom lies in the centre of Choszczno and is surrounded by a promenade. The lakeside recreation area also includes fishing spots. Two different aspects of the same lake therefore stand out: the promenade as a waterside route and the spots for fishing. For another sporting option, the Modry Las golf complex also has the 9-hole Orli Las course.

Additional highlights from the wider county

Beyond Choszczno, Choszczeński County has numerous lakes and rivers, many of which are managed fishing waters. Drawieński National Park is a protected part of the ancient Drawsko Forest and lies within the wider county, particularly in the municipalities of Drawno and Bierzwnik. In the municipality of Drawno, the national park and its surroundings, the marked walking trails total 77 km.

The area’s monastic history also adds to the picture: remnants of a medieval Cistercian monastery complex have been preserved in Bierzwnik. The event “3 Dni na Cysterskim Szlaku” is held there regularly. At the 2024 edition, members of the Association for the Protection of Cistercian Heritage guided visitors through the monastery and to archaeological sites.
