Cerkiewnik brings together two specific interests for trip planning: the Neo-Gothic Church of St. Catherine and St. Anne, and cycling and hiking routes that pass through the village. When choosing a destination, it helps to first consider whether you are mainly looking for a cultural connection or a particular route. The routes vary in how you travel, their length, and their starting and ending points; Cerkiewnik is the start or finish of some, and a stop along the way on others.
Neo-Gothic Church in the Village Center
The Church of St. Catherine and St. Anne stands on a hill in the center of Cerkiewnik. It is a Neo-Gothic, east-facing hall church built of red brick, with a rectangular floor plan. A hall church is a building type with a single, continuous church interior; “east-facing” describes its orientation toward the east. Neo-Gothic architecture draws on Gothic forms in a later style of construction. Here, the forms are inspired by the medieval architecture of Warmia, giving the church a specific regional connection.
Cycling Routes with Different Starting Points
The 20-kilometer cycling route runs from Dobre Miasto via Głotowo, Swobodna, Lake Limajno, and the Chmury forestry station to Cerkiewnik, then returns to Dobre Miasto via Swobodna and Knopin. Cerkiewnik lies on a loop that starts and ends in Dobre Miasto.
The 17-kilometer cycling route, by contrast, starts in Cerkiewnik and runs via Barkweda, Bukwałd, and Różynka before returning to the village. The two rides therefore differ in more than just length: one starts and ends in Dobre Miasto, while the other begins in Cerkiewnik itself.
Hiking Routes through Cerkiewnik
A 42-kilometer hiking route runs from Olsztyn via Brąswałd, the bridge over the artificial channel of the Łyna, Barkweda, and Bukwałd to Cerkiewnik, then continues via Głotowo and Dobre Miasto to Smolajny. Cerkiewnik lies along this route between the sections through Bukwałd and Głotowo.
The 87-kilometer Copernicus Hiking Trail runs from Olsztyn via Cerkiewnik, Dobre Miasto, Smolajny, and Lidzbark Warmiński to Mingajny. Both hiking routes start in Olsztyn and pass through Cerkiewnik, but differ in length and endpoint: the 42-kilometer route ends in Smolajny, while the Copernicus Hiking Trail continues to Mingajny.
To make your initial choice, consider the mode of travel, total distance, and starting and ending points together. The 17-kilometer cycling loop starts and ends in Cerkiewnik; the 20-kilometer route is a loop from Dobre Miasto. Cerkiewnik lies on both hiking routes, which start in Olsztyn and end at different destinations. Before setting out, check the current route and conditions for your chosen trail.
