The market square structures Biskupiec’s old town; seven streets run at right angles toward the four cardinal directions. This urban layout gives the town a distinctive historic character. It is complemented by buildings from several centuries: from the oldest sections of a church wall to an early 20th-century Neo-Gothic water tower. Memorial sites, a viewpoint in the church tower and a route with historical information panels add to the picture. If you want to focus on culture and city history during a trip, these different themes can help you get to know Biskupiec.

Old Town and Architectural History

The oldest sections of the Church of St. John the Baptist date back to the 14th century. The former Protestant church, now the Catholic Church of Blessed Karolina Kózkówna, was built between 1842 and 1848. The city’s history reaches back to 1859 at the Old Pharmacy; a foundation stone at Plac Wolności commemorates its establishment. Townhouses from the first half of the 19th century and from around the turn of the 20th century evoke the town’s former urban development. These buildings represent different periods in the city’s history and offer a chance to consider several eras side by side.

Buildings and Memorial Sites

The former town hall was built in 1895 and stands in the city centre on ul. Pionierów. The Old Tile Factory dates from 1865. Its red-brick building still bears an original German inscription. A brick Neo-Gothic water tower, built in 1912–1913, rises above Biskupiec. It is 39 m tall and has a capacity of 250 m³. A distinctive monument stands at the centre of the renovated market square. It commemorates people who died fighting for the Polish identity of these territories and for the return of Warmia and Masuria to Poland.

Views and Further Discoveries

Since 2010, the tower of the Church of St. John the Baptist has housed a viewpoint overlooking Biskupiec and the surrounding area. It also features a gallery of historical and contemporary photographs of the city. If you want to make the viewpoint a firm part of your plans, check access arrangements in advance. A route with historical information panels describes the city’s past. There is also a fountain square on the site of former buildings. Visitors can relax there and admire the fountain’s lighting in winter.

Cycling and an educational trail add to the range of things to explore in the town: the “Słoneczny Szlak” cycle route runs through the Biskupiec area, and there is also the “Aleja Dymerska” educational trail. If you are looking for a hotel for a cultural stay, the old town layout, historic buildings and these other interests can all inform your choice of Biskupiec.
