Kozin can be explored through its history as a sailing base and its connection to a specific route.
Sailing history and harbor connections in Kozin
After an exploration in the summer of 1980, the Yacht Klub Polski Bielsko chose Kozin as the site for its sailing base. Two years of intensive work followed. After that, Kozin had been prepared sufficiently for the club’s needs for the base to be used.
In the past, 100 to 400 people took part each year in sailing training camps at the club’s base in Kozin. The number of participants is part of the place’s history and, alongside the choice of location, illustrates how it was used for sailing instruction at the time.
The harbor offers a different, practical perspective for travelers: for sailors on the route from Giżycko to Mikołajki, the harbor in Kozin is a convenient stopover. One perspective is historical; the other is guided by the sailing route.
More ideas in the wider Lötzen destination
The wider Lötzen destination also offers sights and activities in Giżycko. Boyen Fortress lies on the isthmus between Lakes Kisajno and Niegocin and is described as Giżycko’s biggest attraction. Built in 1900 and restored, the water tower serves as a viewpoint and has a café and a small gallery with souvenirs related to the town’s history. The swing bridge over the Łuczański Canal is considered a unique technical monument in Europe. St. Bruno’s Church on Pionierska Street is Giżycko’s oldest Catholic church. Its themes range from Boyen Fortress and the viewpoint to the technical monument and the church’s history.
For water and cycling, there are further specific places to visit in Giżycko. Eko Plaża Giżycko is located where Lake Niegocin meets the Niegociński Canal. The public recreation and tourism complex offers SUP boards, kayaks, and boats for hire; check whether rentals are currently available before making plans. The eastern section of the Mazurska Pętla Rowerowa runs from Pisz through Giżycko to Węgorzewo and is 103 km long. Giżycko is also home to the main port of Żegluga Mazurska; excursions by passenger boat are recommended from there. If you are considering such an excursion, check the schedule in advance.
Two different scales of travel planning come together here: in Kozin, the harbor is a stop on a sailing route; the cycling route includes a 103 km section from Pisz through Giżycko to Węgorzewo. The first is a single stopping point; the second is a longer route option. This lets you weigh up whether a waterside stop or the cycling route should shape your plans.
If you include both places, plan them as separate destinations and check the connections separately.
