Pierkunowo lies on Lake Kisajno and combines the history of a manor estate with lakeside and landscape features. A 6 km cycle path connects the village with Giżycko.

Pierkunowo’s Manor Estate and History

Pierkunowo was founded as a rent-paying village in 1505. During the interwar period, it was a state-owned estate with an extensive manor complex and a distillery. The manor house complex dates from the mid-19th century. It includes a manor house, a gardener’s house, two cowsheds, a granary, a warehouse, and a park. Its founding as a rent-paying village, the 19th-century manor house complex, and the state-owned estate of the interwar period belong to different chapters in the village’s history.

The Lake and Nearby Landscape

On Lake Kisajno, the municipal beach has a gently sloping shore; it is recommended for families with children and for seniors. The Dom Perkun restaurant is on the eastern shore of Lake Kisajno, in the centre of Pierkunowo. If you are planning a visit, check current visitor information beforehand. The Perkuny nature reserve is also nearby. It is located behind the Pierkunowo manor estate, on the southern shore of Lake Tryd, which covers about 41 ha. The area protects a raised bog formed as a former dead-ice hollow gradually became filled in. Two distinct water and landscape features can therefore be found around Pierkunowo: the municipal beach on Lake Kisajno and the bog at Lake Tryd.

Cycling in Pierkunowo and the Wider Giżycko Destination

A 6 km cycle path connects Giżycko with Pierkunowo. It is considered easy and safe and is also described as suitable for family bike rides. The eastern section of the Mazurska Pętla Rowerowa, from Pisz to Węgorzewo via Giżycko, also runs through the wider Giżycko destination; it is 103 km long. The local connection and the regional section offer two very different route lengths. If cycling is a priority for your trip, you can first decide whether the route between Pierkunowo and Giżycko or the longer section of the Mazurska Pętla Rowerowa is more relevant to you.

Historical Sights in Giżycko

Within the wider Giżycko destination, Giżycko is another place with its own historical landmarks. Boyen Fortress stands on the isthmus between Lakes Kisajno and Niegocin and is described as Giżycko’s greatest attraction. The swing bridge over the Łuczański Canal is considered a unique technical monument in Europe. This offers a choice between the history of the manor estate in Pierkunowo and the fortress and swing bridge in Giżycko as distinct historical themes. The water tower in Giżycko, built in 1900 and restored, serves as a viewing point with a café and a small gallery of souvenirs related to the town’s history. St. Bruno’s Church on Pionierska Street is Giżycko’s oldest Catholic church. Giżycko is also home to the main port of Żegluga Mazurska; excursions by passenger boat are recommended from there. If you are planning a boat trip, check the timetable beforehand.
