A public museum founded in 1802 marks an early milestone in Teschen: the Muzeum Śląska Cieszyńskiego is one of the oldest public museums in Central Europe and the oldest public museum in Poland. It was founded by the parish priest Leopold Jan Szersznik. Its permanent exhibition, “At the Crossroads of History and Cultures,” focuses on the history and culture of the nobility, bourgeoisie and rural population in Cieszyn Silesia. It therefore highlights the different social worlds of these groups, rather than focusing solely on the history of one group.
Castle Hill and Architectural History
Castle Hill also tells stories of different eras. It is home to the Rotunda of St Nicholas, considered one of Poland’s oldest architectural monuments. Also on Castle Hill is the Gothic Piast Tower, which stands 24 metres high. Comparing the two buildings offers two distinct perspectives on architectural history: the rotunda’s religious dedication and the tower’s Gothic form.
Zamek Cieszyn offers another example of historical use: the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Design is housed in a Neoclassical hunting lodge built by the Habsburgs. The building thus connects a courtly past with its present institutional focus on design and entrepreneurship. In Teschen, you will encounter not only individual historic buildings, but also buildings whose history can be traced through their original function.
Books, Printing and Craftsmanship
Książnica Cieszyńska holds more than 130,000 printed volumes, including around 18,500 early printed books and 17,000 manuscripts. These figures give a sense of the diversity of its holdings: alongside printed books are historical prints and handwritten records. One of the institution’s statutory responsibilities is to share knowledge about the written culture of Cieszyn Silesia through exhibitions and academic conferences.
It is based in the so-called Bludowski House. The building was created in the 18th century by converting a former ducal mint dating from the 13th century. The building’s history therefore encompasses two clearly distinct periods: the mint’s medieval origins and its later transformation. Another look at writing and technology can be found at the Muzeum Drukarstwa. It commemorates the printing traditions of Cieszyn Silesia and preserves unique collections as well as machines that are still in working order.
The Izba Tradycji also highlights a particular craft product: the Cieszyn hunting rifle. Its manufacture began in the second half of the 16th century. Together with the printing machines and historic book collections, it completes a thematic arc from craftsmanship and printing technology to the preservation of written culture.
Routes Between the Canal and the Olza
Cieszyńska Wenecja is a tourist attraction and an area for walks. Its artificial Młynówka Canal dates back to the 16th century. For exploring Teschen, the Szlak Kociej Szajki leads to Castle Hill, the Market Square and Cieszyńska Wenecja. The canal and the route represent different aspects of the city experience: one is a historic waterworks, the other a route linking several destinations.
A combined walking and cycling path also runs along the revitalised banks of the Olza by the Open Air Museum. The Open Air Museum Cieszyn–Český Těšín tour begins on the Polish side at Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa. It follows Aleja Piastowska across the Friendship Bridge and continues along the Czech bank.
Another Local Tradition
The Arcyksiążęcy Browar Zamkowy Cieszyn is also part of the area’s local character. The brewery has been operating continuously since 1846 and produces beer using traditional methods. Its long history of operation adds another enduring craft tradition to the insights into architectural, book and printing history. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Teschen, you can plan your stay around the subjects that interest you most: its collections and written culture, the architecture of Castle Hill or the routes along the Olza.
