Skoczów brings together historic buildings in its townscape, views from the unforested slopes of Kaplicówka and hiking trails of varying lengths. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on architectural history, a viewpoint or a longer hike. For two hiking trails, you can compare the distance and approximate duration directly; local trails and the Easter custom offer different points of interest.
Town Hall, Market Square and Architectural History
The town hall is an integral part of the historic buildings around the Market Square, whose medieval layout has been preserved. The town hall was built in 1797, and work on the tower was completed in 1801. The dates refer to two separate stages: the town hall was built four years before work on the tower was completed. Regionally, the town hall is of considerable historical, artistic and scholarly value. The preserved medieval layout and the town hall’s construction phases therefore represent distinct historical points of reference.
Another construction date belongs to the Church of St Peter and Paul: it was built in 1762 in the late Baroque style. Those interested in architecture can set this clearly dated building in Skoczów alongside the history of the town hall. The Muzeum Parafialne im. Św. Jana Sarkandra adds a different subject to this architectural perspective: during a visit, you can learn more about the life and cult of Saint John Sarkander.
Local Trails and Themed Routes
On the map of Skoczów, the Morcinkowski Trail connects places associated with Gustaw Morcinek. In Skoczów, the Greenways route leads to the Market Square and on to the Muzeum im. G. Morcinka. The lowland circular trail of Greenway Kraków–Morawy–Wiedeń also passes through Skoczów. The routes thus differ in focus: the Morcinkowski Trail connects places associated with Morcinek, the Greenways route leads to two named stops, and the lowland circular trail passes through the town.
Choose Hiking Trails by Distance and Duration
Two trails for longer hikes start in Skoczów and lead to different destinations. The green trail runs via Górki Wielkie to Błatnia/Błotny; it is about 15 kilometres long and takes approximately five hours. The yellow trail leads via Lipowiec to Równica, is about 11 kilometres long and takes approximately four hours. By both measures, the yellow trail is the shorter option. You can take the approximate times into account when planning your day, while keeping the two different destinations in mind.
Kaplicówka and the Easter Custom
Kaplicówka is a low hill just under 400 metres above sea level. Its unforested slopes offer views of Skoczów and the mountains. From the centre of Skoczów, you can reach the summit via Aleja Jana Pawła II. The views and location offer a focus apart from the longer hiking trails: you can include the hill in your plans as a destination overlooking the town and the mountains.
In Skoczów, there is an annual custom during Holy Week of parading the Judosz on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. As these days vary from year to year in the Easter calendar, check the specific dates for that year if your trip is planned around this custom.
