Stare Hołowczyce is the northern part of Hołowczyce; the other parts are Nowe Hołowczyce and Hołowczyce-Kolonia. This division helps put place references into context: some refer to Stare Hołowczyce, while others refer to Hołowczyce as a whole. If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in the area, it is worth keeping these two scales in mind.

Getting Around Stare Hołowczyce

There are pavements along Voivodeship Road 811 in the built-up area of Stare Hołowczyce. If pavements are important for your plans, check their current condition locally. Hołowczyce as a whole is a linear village with five kilometres of continuous development. This figure applies to the entire village, not just Stare Hołowczyce. At the edge of Stare Hołowczyce, one spot is marked “Karczma”; another spot, also at the edge of the village, is called “Klepaczówka”.

Religious Traces

A wayside shrine stood on the former property of blacksmith Wacław Parafiniuk. May devotions were held there. This connects a named place in Stare Hołowczyce with religious practice and the history of a local craftsman. The shrine and the May devotions offer a different perspective on the area from the names of the marked spots: they tell of religious life, not of the settlement’s divisions.

Hołowczyce and the Wider Area

Some aspects of the older history also refer to Hołowczyce as a whole. Around 1580, the village was listed in the tax register under the historical name “Olonczyce”. In the 19th century, most of its residents were farmers of Ruthenian and Mazovian origin who belonged to the Greek Catholic faith. These two details offer different perspectives: the earlier one gives a historical place name, while the later one describes the population and its religious affiliation.

A religious event is dated to 1905: residents of Hołowczyce went in a procession to the church in Sarnaki to adopt the Roman Catholic faith. While this episode describes a procession with a specific destination, another account tells of help during the occupation. Jan and Jadwiga Grobicki sheltered a Jewish boy; he survived the war while working as a farmhand on their farm. In 1989, they received a medal and the title “Righteous Among the Nations” for this act.

Other historical features of the area include a small wooden manor house that remained in Hołowczyce until the post-war years. There was an inn at the northern end of Hołowczyce. At a second site known as “Mogiłki”, people once made use of the steep slope for sledding and skiing. These details concern former uses and buildings, adding perspectives on Hołowczyce as a whole to the history of Stare Hołowczyce.

The name Korolówka is also part of local tradition: it is the name by which the road leading from Hołowczyce to the Zabuże estate is known, and the road still exists. Together, the place names, historic buildings and dated events reveal different scales of local history—from the northern part, Stare Hołowczyce, to Hołowczyce as a whole.
