The Muzeum Złota is housed in a listed building incorporated into the fortification walls of Złotoryja. Here, the history of gold in Goldberg In Schlesien meets a tangible part of the town’s history. The Old Town, church architecture and walking routes offer further ways to explore the town; a science centre and puzzle quests also invite visitors to get to know it from different perspectives.
Gold history in a historic building
The “Górnictwo złota” exhibition explores the history of gold mining and gold extraction in Złotoryja and the surrounding area. On display are mining tools and gold pans, different forms of gold, and gold-like minerals such as “fool’s gold”. This takes the focus beyond the gold that was extracted: tools, gold panning and minerals offer different ways to engage with the subject.
The building itself also contributes to the special connection between the town and the exhibition. It dates from the second half of the 17th century and is a listed monument. Its incorporation into the fortification walls links the museum to the historic town layout. The history of gold is therefore encountered here not only as an exhibition topic, but also in a building that is itself part of the town’s historic character.
Old Town, church and walks along the walls
Złotoryja’s Old Town has restored historic townhouses and a preserved medieval street plan. Both draw attention to different aspects of the town’s heritage: its older layout and historic buildings that have been restored.
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary features Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural elements. There is also a mysterious well inside. The three styles offer an architectural comparison within a single building. During the 2026 tourist season, the church tower was open from Thursday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 16:00. As access is seasonal, check the current opening hours before planning a visit to the tower.
Visitors can walk along the fortification walls and through the plantations laid out in place of the former moat. Trees there are often more than 100 years old. The route thus connects the walls with a second historic trace: the site of the former moat, now occupied by the plantations.
Discover through experiments and puzzles
SOWA is a local science centre in Złotoryja. Its concept is based on independent searching, discovery and experimentation. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for an individual visit. SOWA is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, except on public holidays. Check the current opening hours before your visit.
Five themed quests combine puzzles with the town’s history and lead to interesting places. If you are planning a quest, check the current selection in advance, as the number of quests may change. Recurring events such as Święto Złota offer another way to engage with local heritage: they bring the community together and promote cultural heritage.
Geology and regional orientation
Złotoryja is surrounded by the Kaczawskie Foothills. They are part of the Land of Extinct Volcanoes and give the surrounding area distinctive geological characteristics. This landscape context complements the historic buildings and routes with another perspective on the town: alongside its layout, the geology of the surrounding area also comes into focus.
For regional travel, National Road No. 3, part of European route E65, connects Złotoryja with Wrocław, Jelenia Góra and border crossings. Goldberg In Schlesien thus brings together a range of themes: gold extraction and town history, architecture and walking routes, experiments and puzzles, and the surrounding geology.
