Legnicki is best known for its historic sites and routes that bring different periods into focus. Legnickie Pole is home to an important monastic complex of Silesian Late Baroque architecture; elsewhere, a medieval castle, an early medieval hillfort and an old windmill tell the story of building history. Routes focus on battles, while lakes and protected natural areas offer a different emphasis. If you would like to organise your explorations around your interests, this variety provides several specific starting points.
Legnickie Pole: Monastery and Museum
The present-day monastic complex in Legnickie Pole was built in the 18th century and is considered an important work of Silesian Late Baroque architecture. The former Benedictine monastery complex was recognised as a Monument of History of Poland by decree of the Polish President on 14 April 2004. Another historical layer awaits you in the former Church of the Holy Trinity in Legnickie Pole: it now houses a museum. Its building history, monument status and current use as a museum give the site several distinct cultural points of interest.
Castles, Hillfort and Monuments
In Prochowice, the medieval castle was built by Stefan of Prochowice around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It is surrounded by a preserved English-style landscaped park covering 12.33 hectares. The castle and park thus bring together building history and a clearly measured park landscape, while remaining distinct features.
In PÄ…tnĂłwek, a devotional sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk from the early 18th century stands; in 2010, it was entered in the register of protected monuments of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. In Jerzmanice, the 18th-century Dutch windmill is one of the particularly valuable structures in Legnicki County. A different type of historic site is the early medieval hillfort site in KrajĂłw, which is considered to have high tourism and sightseeing value. These places offer different discoveries: a roadside figure, a mill building and an early medieval fortified site.
Routes Through History and Landscape
Several routes highlight different historical themes. The 12-kilometre Szlak Bitwy 1241 roku leads from Legnica railway station via Legnica-Piekary and Bartoszów to Legnickie Pole. The 20-kilometre Szlak Bitwy nad Kaczawą connects Dunino, Krajów, Winnica, Bielowice, Warmątowice Sienkiewiczowskie, Tyńczyk and Janowice Duże. Their lengths and sequences of stops alone distinguish the two routes: one leads to Legnickie Pole, while the other links a series of named places.
The 72-kilometre Szlak dookoła Legnicy runs through areas of high natural value and past places that recall the events of 1241 as well as the Battle of the Kaczawa during the Napoleonic Wars. The 19-kilometre green Szlak nad Nysą Szaloną has a different landscape focus: it follows the picturesque valley of the Nysa Szalona along the edge of the Janowice Plateau. Comparing the routes is therefore about more than their lengths; it also means considering the places, landscapes and historical memories mentioned for each one.
The Cistercian Route runs through Legnicki County and the municipalities of Krotoszyce, Legnica, Legnickie Pole, Kunice and Prochowice. It is connected with the presence of the Cistercians in Lower Silesia and complements the battle-focused routes with a cultural and historical theme.
Water and Protected Nature
The 95-hectare Jezioro Kunickie is notable for its wide variety of waterbirds. The lake offers opportunities for water sports, fishing, swimming and walks along the shore. Nature watching and a range of activities on the water therefore come together in one place.
Protected areas, both small and large, also showcase different natural environments. The Mierzowice Ecological Corridor covers 155.25 hectares of woodland and meadows and is home to 15 protected plant species, including eight strictly protected species. The Dolina Odry Natura 2000 site is located in the municipalities of Prochowice and Ĺšcinawa. Its riparian forests support a diverse range of wildlife, including grey herons, black storks, kestrels, red kites and black kites. The specific figures for area and species show just how varied the natural features of this region are.
