Wohlau offers a range of themes for a trip: cycling routes and landscapes, the Oder and places with a long history. In Wołów County, you can plan your itinerary around whichever of these themes you want to focus on most. This also helps you choose a base for your stay: what matters is which places and activities you actually plan to include.

Routes between the Oder and the countryside

The yellow Wołów–Wrzosy–Moczydlnica Klasztorna–Orzeszków cycling route is about 16 kilometres long and runs through the Jezierzyca Valley Landscape Park. The “Cudne Manowce” cycling route is 38 kilometres long. These distances provide a concrete guide to the length you might want for a cycling trip. The section of the blue Oder Trail in Brzeg Dolny also starts in the county; the signposted transregional Cistercian Route is part of the regional trail network too. Before setting out, check the current signage and route conditions.

In Budków, a circular route runs along the Oder floodplain, the Oder’s old river channels and a wet meadow. The village also has a campsite, suitable for a break and some time to relax in nature. The Oder itself is a waterway through Wołów County. These routes and landscapes offer different ways to experience the region; they do not need to be combined into a single circuit.

Forests, protected areas and water

Among the attractive landscapes in Wołów County are wooded dune ridges. The Jodłowice Nature Reserve covers 9.36 hectares and lies in the municipalities of Brzeg Dolny and Oborniki Śląskie. It protects a mixed forest where fir trees occur at the edge of their range. The Jodłowice Natura 2000 site, designated PLH020106, lies entirely within the nature reserve.

At Zalew Słup, there is a bathing area managed by the Municipal Centre for Sport, Tourism and Recreation in Wińsko. Bathing is seasonal; check current opening times before visiting. A municipal notice from 2024 states that fishing at Zalew Słup requires a fishing licence and a paid permit from GOSTiR. Check the applicable conditions before heading out to fish.

History in Wołów and the surrounding towns

In Wołów, the town hall dates from the second half of the 15th century, while Piast Castle is dated to 1157. The organs in St Lawrence’s Church, built by Adam Casparini in 1716, have been preserved. These three landmarks trace different chapters of the town’s history—from the medieval dating of the castle and town hall to an instrument from the early 18th century.

Brzeg Dolny also has a multifaceted historic heritage. The historic park complex included a bath pavilion designed by Langhans, a tea house, a wine cellar, a wine pavilion, a mill and a forester’s lodge. In 1801, with the support of the Prussian king Frederick William III, Franz Achard established the world’s first sugar factory in Konary. A monument to Achard and remains of the sugar factory have been preserved there. The smelting furnaces in Tarchalice are among the archaeological iron-smelting sites that are one of the county’s tourist assets.

Other historic highlights include the 14th-century Church of the Holy Trinity in Wińsko and the Cistercian Abbey in Lubiąż, considered the largest Cistercian abbey in Europe. Lubiąż lies on the right bank of the Oder, surrounded by fields, meadows and forests. In Białków, the University of Wrocław’s Centre for Astronomical Education is located on the former estate of amateur astronomer Leo Wutschichowsky; check in advance whether visits are possible. The church tower in Głębowice, adapted for tourism, is equipped with two telescopes from which visitors can view the surrounding Dolina Łachy Natura 2000 area. Check the current visitor arrangements there before travelling as well.
