The Powder Tower in Strehlen is the only tower of the former town fortifications to have survived to this day. It was built in the 15th century on a rectangular plan and is about 15 metres high. At more than 70 metres, the Town Hall Tower is on a different scale. It brings together height and two distinct exhibitions: a mineral exhibition and a permanent exhibition featuring photographs of pre-war Strzelin.

Sacred architecture and culture

The sacred architecture also reflects the city’s long history. The Rotunda of St. Gotthard dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Silesia. The Gothic Chapel of St. George at the hospital was built in 1351 within the former municipal hospital complex. Since 1993, the chapel has housed Galeria Skalna, which is managed by the cultural institution Strzeliński Ośrodek Kultury. Here, the history of a historic building meets a long-standing cultural use.

Another element is the planned Historical Trail. It is to consist of eight brass figures of historical figures, which are to be placed on granite stones connected to the city’s history. Plaques with QR codes are planned for the figures. These are intended to give residents of the border area access to tourist and educational descriptions and professional audio recordings about the trail’s sites.

Views, stone and water

The old water tower on the slope of Góra Szańcowa is currently used as a viewing tower. From there, the view extends over the Strzelińskie Hills, the Ślęża Massif and part of the Silesian Lowlands. This means that, alongside the individual buildings, several distinct landscape areas are also in view.

Strehlen’s active granite quarry on Kamienna Street is considered the deepest open-pit mine in Europe and the second deepest in the world. It presents a different facet of the town from its historic buildings. Aquapark Granit adds a recreational touch: it includes a 25.00 × 12.50 metre swimming pool and a leisure pool with numerous water massage stations.

Routes and getting around

The journey from Wrocław to Strehlen takes about 40 minutes by train or car. A railway line and Voivodeship Road 395 connect the two places. One specific hiking route is named: a red trail leads from Strehlen to Gromnik.

The Strzelińskie Hills, associated with Strehlen, lie in the wider region. They can be explored via a dense, well-marked network of cycling and hiking trails. The Tourist Information Centre in Strehlen provides numerous information brochures about the municipality and its surroundings. This can help you plan whether to focus on the city’s buildings and cultural sites or the trails in the wider region.
