An 80.35-metre-high Town Hall tower, a castle tower with a museum and the Oder Valley with its river bends reveal different sides of Głogowski. In Głogów, architectural history and culture take centre stage; elsewhere, described river landscapes, trails and cultural traces invite you to choose your own focus.

Głogów between the Town Hall, castle and theatre

The Town Hall tower in Głogów was reconstructed from 1994 to 1996 based on a 1720 design. The observation point at a height of 47 metres was open on Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m.; a visit required a reservation. The Town Hall also tells the story of several construction phases: its origins date back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, while its present appearance took shape through renovations from 1832 to 1835 and from 1847 to 1850. The west wing preserves vaulted rooms dating from the transition between the Gothic and Renaissance periods.

Zamek Książęcy was rebuilt from 1971 to 1983 and houses the Muzeum Archeologiczno-Historyczne. The castle tower serves as an observation point and can be visited as part of a museum visit. The exhibition “Architectural Details from the Old Town” displays sculptures and other stone objects from former buildings in Głogów. The Town Hall and castle offer different points of interest: the preserved vaulted rooms and building phases here, and historic architectural details from the city there.

The rebuilt Teatr im. Andreasa Gryphiusa took its present form through reconstructions carried out from 2017 to 2019. Today, it serves as the home of a branch of the Municipal Cultural Centre and as a venue for concerts, performances and conferences. If you would like to plan a visit, check the current events programme in advance.

Oder Valley and trails

The Oder Valley described in Powiat głogowski retains visible river bends, oxbow lakes and sandbanks. The riverside strip between Borek and Leszkowice has been a protected nature conservation area since 1986. The Oder Valley is also a bird migration route and provides numerous habitats for waterbirds. The area around Borkowo, Golkowice and Mileszyn is particularly suitable for fishing and recreation.

A cycling route runs along the left bank of the Oder through the municipality of Pęcław, from Chobienia to Głogów. Check its current condition and markings before setting out. In the same municipality, a nature trail follows the route Białołęka–Droglowice–Leszkowice. Another specific cycling route is “Jerzmanowa–Głogów–Jerzmanowa”: it is 32 kilometres long, and its condition and markings should also be checked in advance. The details offer different kinds of guidance: the route along the left bank has a stated course and endpoints, while the cycling route via Jerzmanowa and Głogów has a stated total length.

The options on the water have also changed: the Głogów marina opened on 30 April 2016. The excursion boat “Laguna” subsequently returned to the Oder, and the harbour was also expanded to include kayaks and pedal boats. If you are planning a trip or to use a watercraft, check current availability in advance.

More places and cultural traces

Edward Stachura lived and worked in Grochowice in the winter of 1967. The lives of the villagers were portrayed in his work “Siekierezada.” In Czerna, in the municipality of Żukowice, there is a palace in the Gothic-Renaissance style; check its condition and access before visiting. Brzeg Głogowski is home to a well-preserved castle complex. The park probably dates from the mid-19th century, although a park had already existed here in the 18th century.

The castle park in Jerzmanowa is well suited to long walks. Its five hectares of trees include avenues and evergreen ivy; the grounds also feature ponds. Local residents have stocked these ponds with fish. For fishing, the municipality of Jerzmanowa also recommends the commercially operated ponds in Bądzów, which are home to various fish species. Check in advance whether they are currently open.
