In Lubański County, urban architectural history, castles and traces of water engineering come together. The landscape of the Kwisa Valley, with its wooded hills and rock faces, adds to the picture. Architecture enthusiasts will find a range of periods and building styles here; those who prefer to focus on the landscape and engineering can discover other facets of the same region.

Towers, Castles and Architectural History

The Wieża Bracka in Lubań was built in 1318. The eight-storey structure is 45 metres high and houses the Mineralogy Department of the Regional Museum in Lubań. The minerals there come from the Kwisa Valley and the Jizera and Karkonosze Mountains. This makes it a place that connects the history of the town with a geological perspective on different landscapes. If you would like to visit the Mineralogy Department, check its current opening hours in advance.

Zamek Czocha also tells the story of several phases of construction. A Bohemian ruler had the castle built in the 13th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bodo Ebhardt led a renovation that gave the castle some of its fairytale appearance. During a guided tour of the courtyards, visitors can also see the castle tower, which offers views of the surrounding area. Its medieval origins and later transformation give the building several historical layers.

The palace in Nawojów Łużycki was built in 1570–1571. Experts consider it one of the most valuable Renaissance architectural monuments in the whole of Upper Lusatia. The Baroque palace in Biedrzychowice is an example of a different style and is among the most impressive buildings of its kind in western Lower Silesia. The Church of the Sacred Heart in Świecie is also worth a closer look for its details: it dates from the 14th century and has a wooden coffered ceiling with portraits of saints.

The Leśniańska Dam is 45 metres high and 130 metres long along its crest. Poland’s oldest hydroelectric power station stands at the foot of the dam. The dam is considered one of Lower Silesia’s most interesting hydrotechnical monuments. These dimensions give a concrete impression of the site, but its significance is not based on size alone: the power station and the history of the engineering works also make it remarkable.

Lubański County presents five themed excursion routes. They lead to fortifications, aristocratic residences, remnants of the former criminal justice system, hydrotechnical monuments and religious monuments. The range thus extends from defensive structures to evidence of religious history and engineering. Excursions in the Kwisa Valley also follow the river, passing wooded hills, rock faces and a reservoir. The themed routes and the landscape offer different perspectives on the area.

For cyclists and pedestrians, Lubań has a 2.8-kilometre shared pedestrian and cycle path along the DK30, which opened in August 2026. The Motopark Olszyna offers something different: a nearly 30-kilometre off-road racing track, described as the largest in Europe. If you are planning a visit, check current event dates and access conditions.

The spa house in Świeradów-Zdrój includes an 80-metre-long larchwood promenade hall. A drinking-water spring containing radon- and iron-rich mineral water is located at the hall’s main entrance. As the operation of visitor facilities can change, check the latest information before using them.

Lower Silesia in a Broader Context

The wider travel destination of Lower Silesia is also home to the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica, which tell a distinctive story of architectural history. They were built in the mid-17th century under the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. As Europe’s largest half-timbered Baroque churches, they are a regional landmark in their own right, alongside the castles, palaces and engineering monuments that distinguish Lubański.
