A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1796, stands right beside St. Catherine’s Church in Jugów. The town combines sacred architectural heritage and the memory of mining with winter sports, trails towards Kalenica and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool. These different attractions can help you choose Jugów according to your interests during your stay.

Church and Local History

Built of stone, St. Catherine’s Church was constructed between 1718 and 1722. Its furnishings include Baroque side altars and a Baroque pulpit with a triptych depicting the life of Saint Catherine. There is also an organ case, confessionals and sculptures. The church’s construction period and furnishings give it a distinct historical significance in the townscape.

A memorial chapel in the cemetery commemorates 151 miners who lost their lives on 9 July 1930 in a disaster at the “Wenceslaus” mine. The cause was a carbon dioxide outburst. The manor house in Jugów was the centre of the Oberjugów estate and served as a residence, in succession, for the Stillfried, Haugwitz and von Pfeil families. Sacred history, the commemoration of the miners and the history of the manor house thus represent different aspects of the town.

The history of the Zygmuntówka mountain hut is also precisely dated: it opened in December 1938. In 1956, the Jelenia Góra branch of the PTTK took over the building and established a tourist mountain hut there. These dates describe the hut’s development; they do not indicate whether it is open today.

Landscape and Trails

The peaks of the Owl Mountains and the Wyrębińskie Hills surround Jugów. Several hiking trails to Mount Kalenica start in the town. You can reach Kalenica on foot via the Jugowska Pass or from Pniaki Road. This identifies different starting points for trails towards the mountain. Check trail conditions and signage locally.

The “Szkółka Leśna” educational trail is in the Kalenica forest district in Jugów. It offers a dedicated way to explore the forest, while the hiking trails to Kalenica provide a direction for planning excursions. Forest access rules may vary; check the applicable requirements before your visit.

Winter Sports and Outdoor Swimming Pool

A district description updated in February 2020 lists five ski runs at Jugów Sport Park, ranging from green to black; the black run has FIS homologation. The total length of the runs is 3,300 metres. For the individual run at Rymarz, the description gives a length of 600 metres and a vertical drop of 180 metres. This allows you to consider one run using its own measurements, while the total figure covers the park. Before planning your visit, check current measurements and the availability of runs and lifts with the operator.

The history of winter sports here also includes the 590-metre drag lift near Zygmuntówka, built in the 1970s. For a visit to the outdoor swimming pool, there is a different option: the pre-war pool is fed by a mountain spring, lies at the foot of the Owl Mountains and is surrounded by forest. Swimming is seasonal; check whether the pool is operating on your planned visit date.
