Marczyce combines a clearly defined landscape with architectural heritage and a history as a summer resort. The northwestern part of the village, toward Stawy Podgórzyńskie, lies in the Obniżenie Sobieszowskie; the eastern and northeastern parts lie in the Wzgórza Łomnickie. From numerous viewpoints, you can see across the entire Karkonosze Mountains, the Jelenia Góra Valley, Zalew Sosnówka and Stawy Podgórzyńskie. The views bring together several named landscape destinations in a single panorama, while the microregions distinguish the locations of the village’s different parts. This helps you plan whether to focus mainly on sweeping views or on the history of the place.
Landscape and the history of the ponds
West of Marczyce lies a complex of ponds whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Cistercians from nearby Cieplice created it. Today, it is an important refuge for waterbirds along a migratory route. Here, landscape shaped as far back as the Middle Ages combines with a present-day role in bird migration. For nature lovers, this offers a different focus from the viewpoints: the emphasis is on the history of the pond complex and its importance for waterbirds.
Architectural heritage and summer resort history
Local architectural heritage includes 14th-century penitential crosses near the community hall on Zamkowa Street. Marczyce is also home to a half-timbered house dating from the late 18th century, which formerly served as a school. Another listed half-timbered residential and farm building was constructed in 1716 and altered in 1730. The former schoolhouse and the residential and farm building served different functions; the dates 1716 and 1730 refer to the latter building. Half-timbering is a construction method featuring an exposed timber frame.
In the 19th century, Marczyce grew in importance as a summer resort and attracted spa guests from nearby Cieplice. The term refers to a summer holiday taken for relaxation at the time and places this visitor history in its historical context. The summer resort period is therefore part of the 19th-century history, while the architectural heritage spans different building and use periods.
Hiking trail to Góra Grodna
For hikers, a blue trail runs from Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój through Marczyce to the 506 m summit of Góra Grodna and continues to Zamek Księcia Henryka. Check the current trail markings before setting out. The neo-Gothic Zamek Księcia Henryka stands on the summit, about 1 km east of Marczyce. Built in 1806 by Count Henryk XXXVIII Reuß zu Köstritz, the tower is an observation tower with crenellations.
