Szklarska Poręba offers a variety of reasons to visit: a striking waterfall with a gorge and geological features, museums covering local history, art and nature, and a shop selling glassware made locally. When choosing this destination, you can start by asking yourself whether scenery, culture or both should shape your stay.

Kamieńczyk Waterfall and its gorge

Kamieńczyk Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Polish Giant Mountains. Its precipice is 843 m above sea level; the water plunges into the Kamieńczyk Gorge in a 27 m-high, three-tiered cascade. The two height figures describe different things: 843 m refers to the elevation of the precipice above sea level, while 27 m is the height of the cascade.

The gorge also has striking dimensions: it is about 100 m long, its vertical rock walls are over 25 m high, and in places it is no more than 4 m wide. The waterfall and gorge therefore form a single landscape attraction, though their measurements describe different things: the cascade captures the water’s descent, while the dimensions of the Kamieńczyk Gorge describe its spatial form.

Behind the middle cascade lies the “Złota Jama” cave. It was partly excavated by the Walloons and contains pegmatite and amethyst deposits. The waterfall, rocky gorge and cave thus combine a striking landscape with geological details that are also interesting in their own right.

Museums covering history, nature and art

The Karkonosze Museum – Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann House presents local history and Szklarska Poręba’s artists’ colony. The focus here is the town itself: its history and artists’ colony offer a different perspective from the geological subjects covered by the two mineralogical institutions.

The Mineralogical Museum and the JUNA Museum of the Earth present geology, including minerals and fossils from around the world. Visitors especially interested in these subjects can explore them at both venues. The KPN Education Centre, by contrast, focuses on the nature of Karkonosze National Park and the Jizera Mountains. Art is the focus of the Sudeten Centre for Culture and Art. Together, these institutions cover several distinct interests: local history and the artists’ colony, geology, nature and art.

Glassware and travel interests to suit you

There is a shop at Leśna Huta where locally made glassware is sold. As the products on offer may change, it is best to check before your visit if particular glassware is important to your plans. This makes the shop a separate point of interest alongside the natural and cultural attractions.

When choosing a hotel in Szklarska Poręba, your interests can be a useful first filter: would you mainly like to explore the waterfall and its geological features, are you more interested in history and art, or would you like to combine different themes? Your answer can help you decide what to focus on during your stay without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
