The Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel combines a neo-Gothic brick building with works of art from very different periods in Żeleźnikowa Wielka. The local routes also have different starting points and destinations: an educational trail passes the church, a green-marked route heads toward Makowica, and a cycling route is listed as planned. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between these routes and considering the church as a cultural attraction in its own right.
Church and Works of Art from Different Centuries
The Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built of brick in the neo-Gothic style. Construction took place between 1912 and 1921, and the church is protected under Poland’s register of historic monuments. The construction dates provide a clear timeframe for the church, but its interior details reach further back in time and later add new elements.
A mosaic dating from 1958 depicts the Archangel Michael above the main portal. Inside the church is also a figurative and ornamental polychrome decoration, painted by Paweł Mitka in 1957. Polychromy refers to multicolored painted decoration; in this case, it includes both figures and ornamental designs. Another painting, from around 1460, depicts Mary with the Christ Child between St. Michael the Archangel and St. John the Evangelist.
The contrast in dates is remarkable: the painting is dated to around 1460, while the church was built more than four centuries later. The painted decoration and portal mosaic were added in the 1950s. Anyone interested in sacred architecture and art can consider the church’s construction date, its subjects, and the different periods in which its features were created as separate aspects.
Educational Trail, Route, and Planned Cycling Route
The “ŻELEŹNIKOWA” educational trail begins at the school in Żeleźnikowa Wielka. From there, it follows the road to the church and turns right by the cemetery. The school, church, and cemetery thus shape the route described. For orientation, this specific route is particularly helpful: the educational trail should not be confused with a route described only by its direction toward a broader destination.
One such longer route is marked green and runs from Nowy Sącz through Żeleźnikowa toward Makowica. It is described differently from the educational trail, which begins at the school and turns by the cemetery. A planned cycling route runs from Żeleźnikowa Wielka to Myślec. Since it is listed as planned, check before setting out on a cycling trip to see whether it has since been marked and maintained. The educational trail, green route, and cycling route can thus each be considered in terms of their own starting point, course, or destination.

For specific train and cycling trips, check the latest timetables and route information. The city also has cultural attractions of its own: Renaissance and Baroque townhouses, as well as narrow streets and courtyards, shape the character of Nowy Sącz’s Market Square. The Town Hall on the Market Square is an eclectic building with a distinctive façade and tower, and serves as the seat of the city administration.
In the center of Nowy Sącz stands the Gothic Collegiate Church of St. Margaret, with medieval and Renaissance furnishings inside. The “Ekumeniczny Szlak Pielgrzyma” (Ecumenical Pilgrim Trail) leads to places important to Poles, Jews, Roma, Germans, and Lemkos, and presents the city’s pre-war multicultural and multiconfessional character. Nowy Sącz is also counted among the oldest cities in Lesser Poland. These aspects of the city offer a cultural point of reference distinct from the church and route details of Żeleźnikowa Wielka.
