The confluence of the Wełna and Nielba rivers is an unusual starting point for exploring Wągrowiec: it is described as the only hydrological phenomenon of its kind in Poland and is not of natural origin. The former Cistercian complex, the lapidarium and water-based activities offer further points of interest. You can shape your visit around the river confluence, history or leisure activities.

The River Confluence and How to Reach It

The Wełna and Nielba rivers meet in Wągrowiec. The site can be reached via a promenade from two directions. The first route leads from the city centre along Aleja Jana Pawła II; the second starts on Gnieźnieńska Street. These different starting points help with orientation: you can choose the route that best fits your way through the city. The confluence itself is more than just a name on the city map—it offers a tangible reason to explore Wągrowiec’s distinctive waterways.

Monastery History and Jewish Heritage

The former Cistercian monastery complex represents the city’s rich past and is the oldest Cistercian abbey in Greater Poland. The underground rooms of the church are also part of the visit: monks were buried there, and visitors can view the rooms. This makes the monastery complex a place where historical significance meets a tangible glimpse into burial history.

Another place of remembrance is the lapidarium on the slope of the former Jewish cemetery. A group of 49 young people recovered submerged Jewish tombstones from the bed of the Struga Gołaniecka River. They commemorate the Jews of Wągrowiec. The recovered stones were set up on the slope of the former cemetery, where the lapidarium is now located. A visit adds another part of the city’s history to the story of the monastery and makes different historical traces visible side by side.

Performances and Playful Discovery

The “Dancing Fountain” presents daily shows from spring to autumn: at midday and after dark. This gives you two time slots around which to plan your visit to the fountain. The city also offers a collection of four tourist games that visitors can use to discover Wągrowiec. If you choose this way of exploring, note that the game materials may be revised.

The fountain and the tourist games offer different ways to experience the place: one features a performance at set times of day, while the others invite you to discover the city through play. Together with the historical sites, they give you a choice: you can focus on the city’s history, an activity at a particular time of day or a playful introduction to the city.

Aquapark and Coffee with Local Roots

Aquapark Wągrowiec is a water and leisure complex. Its facilities include swimming lessons, leisure and sports pools, an 80-metre slide, a current channel, saunas, and a salt cave with a graduation tower. A range of water-based and relaxation options are available there. Individual facilities may change, so check which ones are currently available before your visit.

Coffee from Wągrowiec also draws on local history: it combines Cistercian and Pałuki roots. Those interested can try it at a local café; it is also available as a promotional product from Wągrowiec. As availability may change, it is advisable to check in advance.
