Szamotuły offers two distinctly different ways to plan a trip: historic churches and buildings on the one hand, and a 45 km cycling route on the other. Within the cultural theme, architectural history, sacred art and pilgrimage traditions also stand apart.

Church Art and Religious History

The collegiate church was built in the 14th century. Its star vault is characteristic of German Gothic architecture; the walls and windows feature polychrome paintings and stained glass from the 19th and 20th centuries. The interior furnishings thus combine the medieval construction period with works in paint and glass from considerably later periods. A bronze tomb slab for Andrzej Szamotulski, dating from around 1500, comes from the workshop of Andreas Vischer.

The southern chapel of the collegiate church also houses the image of Our Lady of Consolation of Szamotuły. The Ruthenian icon dates from the first half of the 17th century and has been an object of religious veneration and a destination for numerous pilgrimages for centuries. Alongside the building’s history and furnishings, religious tradition and the image’s special significance also come to the fore.

The Holy Cross Church offers a different historical perspective: the Korzbok-Łącki family built it on the site of the former Świdwa castle; it was consecrated in 1699. The church’s history connects it with a former castle site, while the collegiate church, built in the 14th century, has a different starting point in time.

Defensive Tower and Castle: Different Building Histories

Baszta Halszki illustrates a change of function: built as a defensive tower in the 15th century, it was converted for residential use around 1518. The name Baszta Czarnej Księżniczki is also used for the tower. Górków Castle is in the northern part of the city and dates from the late 15th century; it is home to the Muzeum – Zamek Górków. For the tower, the focus is on the transition from defensive to residential use; for the castle, it is on its date and connection with the museum.

Cycling Route as a Separate Focus

The Szamotulska Pętla Zachodnia offers a dedicated cycling option. The route is 45 km long and starts at the city and municipal administration offices at ul. Dworcowa 26. From there, it leaves Szamotuły via 3 Maja, Sportowa and Lipowa streets. It is not signposted, so take this into account when planning. The starting point, length and sequence of streets provide concrete details for choosing your route.

Historical Periods

The history of the buildings and art spans several periods: the collegiate church, built in the 14th century, was followed by the defensive tower and castle in the 15th century. The tomb slab around 1500 and the conversion of Baszta around 1518 mark the transition to the 16th century. The icon from the first half of the 17th century and the consecration of the Holy Cross Church in 1699 continue the sequence. The paintings and stained glass from the 19th and 20th centuries are considerably later.
