A cultural and historical exploration of Schildberg can begin in Ostrzeszów at the parish church: it was founded in 1353, its nave was added in 1360, and it was rebuilt from 1721 to 1723 after earlier destruction. Its building history thus spans several centuries and is complemented by the interior furnishings.
Church Art and Museum History
The parish church features frescoes donated by citizens of Ostrzeszów from the 14th to the 19th century, as well as Baroque altars and a copy of Murillo’s “Assumption of the Virgin”. The chancel arch contains limewood figures, probably carved by Albrecht Dürer. The different works of art and the long building history offer various starting points for exploring the town’s cultural heritage.
The museums also each have their own focus. A museum about the presence of the Bernardines and the history of the Sisters of Nazareth is located in the church and monastery complex of the Sisters of Nazareth. There is also a temporary exhibition about the Sisters of Nazareth in Grodno; former burial crypts are open to visitors. Visits are possible on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00, 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., and on Sundays at 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. Check visiting hours before planning your visit.
The Władysław Golus Regional Museum is located in the town hall at Rynek 19. Its permanent exhibitions cover Norwegian officers at Oflag XXI C, the work of Antoni Serbeński, and “Ignacy Moś for His City”. Together with the museum in the Sisters of Nazareth complex, it offers another way to explore the different themes of local history.
Cycling Routes with Different Itineraries
The Amber Cycling Route starts in Syców and passes through the Ostrzeszów Hills, Kobyla Góra, Ostrzeszów, Mikstat, Ołobok, Kalisz, Russów, Stare Miasto, Konin and Ślesin before reaching Przewóz. It runs mostly on paved roads with little traffic; some sections are unpaved, and there are occasional field or forest tracks. There are no major technical difficulties, and the route is suitable regardless of bicycle type or fitness level. Surfaces and signage may change; check current route conditions before setting out.
Two other routes differ in length and itinerary. The black-marked “W Dolinę Baryczy” connecting route runs from Ostrzeszów via Rojów to Szklarka Myślniewska, is 11 km long and suitable for beginners. The red-marked “Szlak Przyrodniczy” nature trail is 21 km long. It starts at OSiR in Ostrzeszów and runs via the Jodły Ostrzeszowskie nature reserve, Pieczyska, Godziętowy, Tokarzew and Królewskie before returning to OSiR. This offers a choice between a shorter connecting route and a longer circular route with explicitly named stops.
Swimming and Getting There
