Leszno combines visible traces of its history with experiences for a range of interests: portraits on street walls, historic buildings, a history trail in the Zatorze district and a wind tunnel at the airfield. Culture, puzzles and aviation each have their own place.

City history in the streets and in the museum

The murals on Leszno’s streets include portraits of three people from very different fields: composer Roman Maciejewski, poet Stanisław Grochowiak and racing driver Alfred Smoczyk. The selection brings together names from music, literature and sport, without requiring the works to be combined into a formal route.

Leszno’s preserved historic street layout includes the town hall, the collegiate church, the synagogue, former Protestant churches and the residence of the town’s former lords. These buildings and places give the historic cityscape several facets. St. Nicholas Church was rebuilt after 1680 and serves as the family mausoleum of the Leszczyński family.

The synagogue adds a different architectural note: its Baroque main building dates from the 18th century, while the tower was added in 1905. The Sułkowski Palace is also a Baroque residence. It acquired its present form in the mid-18th century following renovations after several fires. These buildings reveal different historical phases of construction, rather than reducing the city’s history to a single period.

At the Regional Museum in Leszno, the permanent exhibition “At the meeting point of worlds. The history of Leszno from the 16th to the 20th century” presents selected Jewish ritual objects. The exhibition also includes a Gothic monstrance from St. Nicholas Church. The museum thus brings together religious objects and the history of the city across several centuries.

Puzzles, aviation and the Way of St. James

In the Zatorze district, “Szlakiem Zatorzaków” is a walking history trail. The game combines twelve numbered, distinctive posts with puzzles about the history of Leszno and the district. Its local focus on Zatorze sets it apart from the historic buildings in the city’s street layout: here, you explore the city’s history through the tasks in a game.

At Leszno Airfield is the FreeFlyCenter wind tunnel, a freefall simulator that visitors can try. If you’d like to include this experience in your trip, check current visitor access before you travel. The Antidotum AirShow Leszno, by contrast, is a two-day air show held every year in June. Check the dates for the relevant edition before travelling if you want to plan your visit around the event.

The Greater Poland section of the Way of St. James also passes through Leszno; it begins on the outskirts of the city, in the Grzybowo district. The options therefore differ not only in subject but also in their connection to the city: the trail focuses on the history of Leszno and Zatorze, while the Way of St. James passes through Leszno as a regional pilgrimage route. Together with the buildings and museum, these offer a choice of locally focused city history, a museum visit, aviation-related experiences and a section of a long-distance route.

When planning your trip, two details in particular depend on specific dates: visitor access to the FreeFlyCenter and the dates of each edition of the air show. The city’s history, murals and architectural phases provide distinct themes. You can choose what interests you most about Leszno and plan around the date-dependent experiences.
