The Rompeolas promenade offers views of sunrises and sunsets. But Sorsogon is more than just its bay: a shallow lagoon, a forested mountain with a crater lake, and a cathedral that has witnessed important chapters in the city’s history each offer a different perspective.
Lagoon, Coast and Protected Marine Areas
On Paguriran Island in Bacon, the views go hand in hand with exploring the island. Visitors can paddle across from the nearby beach and swim in the shallow lagoon. Depending on the tides, the water is roughly ankle- to waist-deep; local access conditions may also vary. A variety of marine life can be seen in the lagoon. From the island’s summit, you can look out over Paguriran and the nearby coast of Bacon. Sturdy hiking shoes are a sensible choice for the climb. Check local conditions before your visit.
Pagol Beach in Sawanga, Bacon, offers a different kind of underwater experience: freediving involves diving without scuba gear while holding your breath. Underwater, you can discover corals and marine animals such as fish and octopuses clinging to rocks. Check local conditions before visiting.
Designated protected areas are also part of the coastal landscape. A marine protected area has been designated in the municipal waters of Bacon; Sorsogon Bay is also home to the Sorsogon City Fish Sanctuary, another protected marine area.
Pepita Park offers a different view of the bay. This rest stop for travelers has a crab-shaped viewing deck, with views of sunsets and Sorsogon Bay. The open Rompeolas promenade and the park’s unusually shaped terrace thus provide different vantage points by the water.
Forest, Hiking Trail and Crater Lake
Mt. Pulog in Sta. Cruz, Bacon, is densely forested and has a hidden lake inside a volcanic crater. Pulog Lake lies at the summit and is the destination on the hiking route described here. The route begins on a trail through rural woodland to the halfway camping area. From there, a path through cogon grass leads to the lake. The transition from forest to cogon grass shapes the hike’s landscape. Before setting out, ask locally whether a guide is available and check on the condition of the trail.
Cathedral and Festival Calendar
Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is a cultural and historical landmark in Sorsogon City. It has witnessed significant events in the city’s history, including the Philippine Revolution and World War II, as well as religious and cultural celebrations.
The festivals also have different focuses. The Sorsogon Festival is a month-long celebration held in December. It highlights the city’s history, culture and ethnic identity, as well as the pili harvest. The Pili Festival coincides with the feast day of the city’s patron saints, Peter and Paul, on June 29; Catholic Masses and processions are part of the celebrations. The annual program may vary. If you’re traveling specifically for a festival, check the latest dates and events in advance.
Getting Around by Road
The Sorsogon City Coastal Road is a useful reference point for travel. Opened in 2022, the road is 5.52 kilometers long and has four lanes. It serves as a bypass for vehicle traffic and connects the city center with Casiguran, Gubat and Castilla. If you’re planning a trip, check current route conditions.
