Mount Mayon is known for its perfect conical shape. But the Bicol Region cannot be reduced to this image: Albay’s biodiversity, water sports and golf in Camarines Sur, as well as historic sites and festivals, each offer their own highlights. When planning your trip, first consider what interests you most—nature, active experiences or cultural history.
Nature and landscapes
The Albay Biosphere Reserve is of great conservation value. It encompasses 182 species of terrestrial plants, including 46 endemic species. Five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles are found in Albay. The reserve is also home to four endemic mammal species and twelve endemic bird species, including the Luzon bleeding heart (Gallicolumba luzonica).
Albay’s marine and coastal ecosystems are also diverse, including 12 mangrove species, 40 species of marine algae (macroalgae) and 10 seagrass species.
The Quitinday Hills and Nature Park in Camalig, Albay, offers a different kind of landscape. The 400-hectare area includes hundreds of lush green hills formed by ancient limestone deposits. Bulusan Lake is a tourist destination in Bulusan, Sorsogon. Camarines Sur is home to the Caramoan Islands and Mount Isarog Natural Park. Nature lovers can therefore explore a range of different landscapes and settings: hills, a lake, islands and a nature park.
Active experiences and special places
The CamSur Watersports Complex in Camarines Sur is a six-hectare facility with a six-point cable-ski system. The Pili Grove Golf Club, with its nine-hole golf course, is located within the complex. This means the watersports facility and golf course are in the same place.
The Mayon ATV Adventure in Legazpi, Albay, offers off-road trails ranging from a beginner-friendly course to challenging routes leading to the lava walls of Mount Mayon. Visitors can also sightsee, take photos, go on ATV tours and shop for souvenirs at the Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga, Albay, with Mount Mayon as a backdrop. Each of the two ATV experiences is associated with a different place: one with Legazpi and its trails, the other with a visit to the ruins.
In Donsol, Sorsogon, firefly watching is offered as a peaceful river cruise lit by fireflies after sunset. Donsol is accessible by road from the Daraga–Legazpi area and from other parts of Sorsogon. Check current transport schedules before your trip.
History, festivals and regional cuisine
The ruins of Cagsawa Church in Daraga, Albay, date back to a church built in 1587. They survived fires set by Dutch pirates as well as destruction caused by lahars from Mount Mayon. When visiting the Cagsawa Ruins, take in the historic site with Mount Mayon as a backdrop.
The Butanding Festival in Donsol, Sorsogon, is a thanksgiving celebration featuring cultural performances, community activities and events. It is inspired by the town’s connection to the butanding, or whale shark. Check event dates locally. Rodeo Masbateño is an annual festival in Masbate that celebrates the province’s cattle-raising and livestock heritage. The festivals have different focuses: Donsol highlights its connection to the whale shark, while Masbate celebrates its livestock heritage.
The cuisine also offers a regional touch: Bicol cuisine is known for its spicy dishes. Local specialties in Albay include spicy sili ice cream made with chili peppers. When exploring regional cuisine, you’ll find heat in both savory dishes and an ice cream specialty.
