Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species live in Albay’s marine and coastal ecosystems. Diversity is also evident on land: the Albay Biosphere Reserve encompasses open habitats, grassland and forests inland, and mangrove forests along the coast. Nature lovers will encounter a variety of landscapes and habitat types here, rather than just a single view of nature.

Limestone Hills, Viewpoints and Volcanic Landscapes

The Quitinday Hills and Nature Park in Camalig add a distinctive geological feature to the landscape. This 400-hectare area includes hundreds of lush green hills formed from ancient limestone deposits. Their irregular, pointed cone shapes explain their nickname, “Pili Nut Hills.” This sets them apart from the volcanic landscape around Mount Mayon: both are among Albay’s striking natural features, but represent different types of landscape.

Those looking out over Legazpi City can find a viewpoint at the summit of Ligñon Hill, with 360-degree views of the city. Kapuntukan Hill, by contrast, is known as Sleeping Lion for its unusual, lion-like shape and profile. The two hills offer different perspectives on the landscape: one has a panoramic viewpoint, while the other has a distinctive shape that explains its name.

Traces of History and Culture

Pottery, human bones, beadwork and artifacts estimated to be about 4,000 years old have been found in Hoyop-Hoyapan Cave. These finds give a visit to the cave an archaeological dimension. Another kind of historical trace can be found in Camalig: St. John the Baptist Church was rebuilt in 1842 using massive blocks of volcanic rock from Mount Mayon and completed in 1848.

The ruins of Cagsawa Church, built in 1587, also tell the story of the region; the structure was damaged by lahars from Mount Mayon. In Legazpi, St. Raphael Church, also known as the Church of Legazpi or Saint Raphael Church, is a place of prayer, meditation and pilgrimage for many visitors each year. Together, these places offer different ways to connect with Albay’s history and present: archaeological finds, architectural history and lived religious significance.

Crafts and festivals are also part of the cultural character of the Albay Biosphere Reserve. Pottery in Tiwi and abaca handicrafts in Daraga are examples of traditional crafts in the reserve. The Daragang Magayon Festival is a cultural celebration inspired by the reserve’s three mountains. The Ibalong Festival in Legazpi is celebrated annually in August and is described as a historical and cultural festival. If you are planning a trip for a festival, check the latest dates in advance.

Experiences Between the Lake, Hills and Sea

The seven-hectare Sumlang Lake offers opportunities for boating and fishing; check local arrangements before your trip. At Solong Eco-Park, visitors can picnic, explore Solong Cave and hike to a viewpoint on a hill. From there, the view takes in neighboring hill formations and Mount Mayon. For the latest information on access to the park, ask locally.

At Mount Mayon, off-road ATV routes lead to the lava walls, with trails ranging from beginner-friendly paths to challenging routes. The experience ends with a short hike across hardened lava fields formed by earlier eruptions. The Albay Gulf also offers plenty for those interested in marine life: its 16 dive sites are described as rich in marine resources, including rare sea creatures and colorful corals. For ATV tours and dive sites, check local operating conditions, access and current conditions.

The lake, volcanic slopes and dive sites each offer a different focus: activities range from boating and fishing to off-road routes, short hikes and exploring the underwater world of the gulf. Which ones suit your trip depends on the landscapes and experiences that interest you most.

A Local Specialty

The local cuisine also offers a distinctive flavor: spicy sili ice cream made with chili peppers is highlighted as a local specialty of Albay. It is a unique culinary feature alongside the province’s natural, cultural and historical experiences.
