When choosing where to stay in Moyobamba, it is helpful to distinguish between cultural visits in the city and nature and culinary experiences in the district. The Plaza de Armas is an important cultural landmark in the city. From there, you can reach the Centro Cultural Moyobamba (CUMO) via a paved 350-meter route in about five minutes on foot.
Culture around the Plaza de Armas
The Plaza de Armas de Moyobamba is the main venue for Corpus Christi, the Semana TurĂstica de Moyobamba, and the city’s founding anniversary. Flag-raising ceremonies, parades, and concerts are also held here; specific schedules and programs may vary. Visitors can view and photograph the buildings. In the center of the plaza stands an illuminated ornamental fountain with jets of water and sculptures of water carriers representing the orchid species Cattleya máxima.
The Semana TurĂstica is a traditional festival rooted in local customs and associated with San Juan and San Pedro. Its program includes Pandilla performances involving neighborhoods and public and private organizations, as well as a competition featuring Juane dishes. The annual program may vary.
Museum: Collections and Visiting Hours
The Museo Departamental San MartĂn has nine exhibition rooms. Exhibits include objects and clothing from the AwajĂşn, Shawi, and Kichwa de Lamas Indigenous peoples; traditional ceramics and burial urns from Chazuta; and collections of vessels and textiles from expeditions to Gran PajatĂ©n and Gran Saposoa. Visitor amenities also include a spacious rest area with Amazonian murals by contemporary artists and a departmental library.
The museum is open Monday through Friday and on the first Sunday of each month, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Since opening hours may change, check them before your visit.
Orchids and Ornamental Plants
The Vivero OrquĂdeas AmazĂłnicas features various species of ornamental plants and orchids and is one of the most representative nurseries in the city of Moyobamba. While the Museo Departamental San MartĂn focuses on culture through its collections, the Vivero puts plants center stage. The two offer different experiences, so they appeal to different interests without requiring the same kind of visit.
Nature and Culinary Experiences in the District
At the Reserva EcolĂłgica Tingana, visitors can take canoe trips on the RĂo Avisado and go on ecological walks through plots growing coffee, pitahaya, and vanilla. The reserve also offers regional dishes and innovative Amazonian cuisine made with vanilla and native tubers. The activities offer different experiences: a trip on the water, trails through cultivated plots, or regional cuisine. Canoe trip operations may change; confirm the details when making your specific plans.
The Aguas Termales de San Mateo thermal complex has seven pools with temperatures ranging from approximately 32°C to 40°C. On the slopes of Cerro Oromina, sulfurous water at 8°C flows from two springs, forming two pools with clear-colored water.
At the Aguas Sulfurosas de Oromina, visitors can bathe in sulfurous pools and observe orchids and other plants. The Mirador Punta de Tahuishco offers a 180-degree view of the RĂo Mayo, the surrounding lush vegetation, and forested areas.
