Cueva Cascada Escondida combines a karst cave on the bank of the RĂo Yuracyacu with a waterfall inside the cave. It is located in the CaserĂo La Florida, in the district of Nueva Cajamarca, in the province of Rioja, in the Department of San MartĂn. This makes it a clear focus when choosing a day-trip destination: cave exploration, the waterfall and the riverbank shape the visitor experience. First, take a private car to the entrance to the site, then walk to the cave.
Cave Exploration and Waterfall
The regional tourism authority approved Cueva Cascada Escondida for speleology, or cave exploration, as an adventure tourism activity by resolution dated 3 December 2024. Cascada Escondida is 15 metres high and lies about 190 metres inside the cave. The two measurements answer different questions: 15 metres describes the waterfall’s height, while around 190 metres describes its location within the cave. The waterfall is therefore inside the cave, while the cave is on the bank of the RĂo Yuracyacu.
Access and Preparation
From CaserĂo La Florida to the entrance to the Cueva Cascada Escondida site is 300 metres along an unpaved road. This section can be travelled by private car. From the site entrance, a 100-metre walking trail then leads to the cave. For orientation, it is helpful to read these details as two consecutive sections: the first ends at the site entrance; the second starts there and continues on foot. This keeps the driving section and the walk to the cave clearly distinct in your plans. Road and trail conditions may change; check them before your visit.
Ropes and anchor points strategically installed for visitor safety are used to descend to and ascend from Cascada Escondida. This distinguishes the cave section from the walking trail to the entrance and is relevant when planning your visit. Route conditions may change; check them before your tour.
For cave exploration, the site manager provides boots, a helmet, lighting and gloves; visitors are accompanied during the tour. Confirm that equipment and an escort are available before travelling.
Swimming and Facilities at the Visitor Site
You can also swim in the RĂo Yuracyacu beside the cave entrance after visiting the cave and waterfall. Check local river conditions before entering the water.
An article updated on 3 May 2026 describes cabins, a reception area and safety equipment as part of a visitor project. Before travelling, check which of these facilities are currently available.
