Cuñumbuque combines festival traditions with a location on the Río Mayo and a history in which dairy products and agriculture play a visible role. For travelers, this offers a closer look at Cuñumbuque’s culture: from the San Cristóbal patron saint festival and the “Los Incas” procession to a documented Festival Lácteo. Those who also want to explore the landscape will find named viewpoints and waterways in the district. For planning a trip, specific festival dates are just as important as knowing which places are nearby.

Festival tradition: San Cristóbal and “Los Incas”

The San Cristóbal patron saint festival takes place in Cuñumbuqui on July 20. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, check that year’s program. The calendar listing is a helpful date for planning, but it does not replace information about what is scheduled during your stay.

A special part of the patron saint festivals is “Los Incas.” The procession features Manco Cápac, Mama Ocllo, a Ñusta, and an Inca Mudo. The tradition was revived around 1940 and has continued to be performed since then. The history of the performance therefore extends beyond a single festival date; at the same time, the named figures give the procession a clearly recognizable ensemble.

A performance described in July 1980 offers a specific historical glimpse of how it unfolded: the procession traveled along Santiago Tapullima Pashanasi and 28 de Julio streets to the Plaza de Armas. The central ceremony took place there. Together with the named figures, this makes “Los Incas” tangible as a procession and ceremony, rather than leaving it as merely a festival title.

Dairy products and agriculture

At the first Festival Lácteo in Cuñumbuqui, producers offered yogurt, manjar, and Cuñumbuqui cheese. These three products give the festival a specific culinary focus. For travelers interested in regional products, it is a distinct part of the town’s history alongside its religious festival traditions.

For the I Festival Lácteo on July 24, 2022, livestock farmers were expected to exhibit and sell their products. A dairy products competition was also planned, with categories for small and medium-sized businesses and formalized businesses. The festival is therefore associated both with dairy products on offer and with a planned showcase and competition. The date and program details refer to 2022; if you want to attend an event like this, plan your trip only after checking for currently announced dates.

The agricultural fair is also part of the town’s history. It began in 2009 at the initiative of local agricultural producers and the district administration. This origin reflects a specific connection between producers and local government. If the fair is important to your trip, check whether a date has been announced for your travel dates before making plans.

On the Río Mayo and in the district

Cuñumbuqui is located on the left bank of the Río Mayo. The nearby La Punta viewpoint is two kilometers from Cuñumbuqui and offers views of the valleys of Cuñumbuqui and Zapatero. La Punta is therefore a distinct landscape spot alongside the riverbank. Check current access before making the viewpoint a firm part of your plans.

The district of Cuñumbuqui is also home to El Pozito del Amor in the bed of the Quebrada Shitariyacu and El Pasaje on the bank of the Quebrada de la Banda Shitariyacu. El Pasaje is described as particularly attractive. These names add two places along waterways to the views of the valleys; they can be considered as possible destinations in their own right when exploring the landscape. Ask about current access to El Pozito del Amor and El Pasaje before visiting.

Check the dates of events and access to viewpoints and waterways before adding them as fixed items to your itinerary.
