Lima can be explored through very different experiences: colonial urban development, archaeological sites, a computer-controlled fountain complex and a landscape that turns green seasonally. When choosing a hotel, therefore, no single attraction is decisive; what matters is the focus you want to give your trip. Visiting conditions also differ considerably.

Colonial Cityscape and Fountain Show

The historic center of Lima bears witness to the architecture and urban development of a Spanish colonial city that held great political, economic and cultural importance in Latin America. The monumental complex of the Monastery of San Francisco is part of this center. The focus is therefore not only on a single building, but also on the city’s historical development.

The Circuito Mágico del Agua in Parque de la Reserva offers a different kind of attraction. The complex opened on July 26, 2007, and features 13 computer-controlled fountains, with music, sound and laser light combined in shows. In 2007, the complex received a Guinness record as the largest fountain complex in a public park. At the Fuente de la Fantasía, a 25-minute audiovisual show transforms the water into a 95-meter-long projection screen. The focus here is on the interplay of the fountains and a specifically named show format.

Archaeological Sites and Collections

Lima’s archaeological heritage spans different periods and forms. Huaca Huallamarca is a pre-Hispanic pyramidal temple with successive settlement phases of the Lima, Wari and Inca cultures. Within the present-day area of Parque de las Leyendas are 54 of the more than 70 archaeological sites in the Maranga complex. This figure may be revised as a result of future research.

A 2022 visitor guide identifies Huaca Cruz Blanca as the first archaeological monument in Parque de las Leyendas to be upgraded and opened to visitors. For students, it describes a center for scientific archaeological research, along with interpretation centers about the Peruvian dog and native plants, as part of the renewed tour. These facilities may have been updated.

Engaging with collections is also part of the cultural offering: the collection of Museo Larco is publicly accessible through its online catalog, and the museum promotes multidisciplinary research. This offers a different way to explore the subject than visiting temples and archaeological sites in person.

Parque de La Muralla: Museum and Circuits

Parque de La Muralla is home to the Museo de Sitio del Parque La Muralla. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The opening hours were checked on September 8, 2026; check them again before your trip. You can use a bicycle and non-motorized vehicles on the park’s signed circuits; wearing a helmet is mandatory. The museum visit and circuits are two different ways to use the same park: a visit within set time slots and movement along marked routes.

Seasonal Landscape Near Pachacámac

Pachacámac is one of Lima’s landscape highlights. As the only coastal valley near Lima, it still preserves a green landscape, surrounded by hills that turn green from June onward. The timing may vary depending on conditions. This sets historical urban development and archaeological sites against a landscape whose green character is shaped by the seasons.

This information can help answer various trip-planning questions—about visiting hours, the duration of a particular show and the right time of year to visit.
