Castillo de Chancay, wetlands, and highland lagoons offer different kinds of exploration in Huaral Province. When planning your trip, you can start by choosing between architectural and cultural history, nature observation, and a specific hiking route. In Chancay, the castle combines its architectural history with a collection related to the Chancay culture; in Atavillos Bajo, Laguna Yanaraman and the trail to Rúpac are separate points of reference for different travel interests.

Castillo de Chancay: Architectural History and Collection

Construction of Castillo de Chancay began in 1922 at the initiative of Consuelo Amat y León. The building has 250 rooms, twelve terraces, and four towers. The castle also houses a collection of ceramics, mummies, and textiles from the Chancay culture. Architectural history and the collection are therefore two distinct cultural aspects.

Wetlands in Chancay

The Humedales de Santa Rosa in Chancay were designated the Área de Conservación Ambiental Humedal Santa Rosa-Chancay under Municipal Ordinance No. 013-2020-MPH-CM on September 25, 2020. This protected-area designation has a different focus from the cultural themes of the castle: here, the emphasis is on a municipal environmental designation, while the castle focuses on architectural history and its collection. This allows you to clearly distinguish between nature and culture when choosing where to go on your trip.

Highland Nature and Hiking Trails

Laguna Yanaraman in Atavillos Bajo is a highland lagoon surrounded by hills. The landscape and birds can be observed there. Puya de Raimondi plants grow along the trail to the lagoon. The opportunities for observation are at the lagoon, while the plants grow along the trail leading to it.

A 7.3-kilometer hiking trail leads from Pampas to Rúpac; the journey takes about three hours. Allow for the approximate hiking time as a separate part of your schedule, and confirm route details locally. This makes it possible to include the trail to Rúpac in your trip plans with a specific distance and time, while Laguna Yanaraman offers a different nature experience with opportunities to observe the landscape and birds.

Community and Archaeological Culture

Eco Truly Park in Aucallama has cone-shaped adobe buildings and is an ecological community of Krishna devotees. Chiprac, located in San Miguel de Acos, is instead notable for its association with the Atavillos culture. Their cultural focuses are therefore clearly distinct: the Eco Truly Park is defined by its architecture and community, while Chiprac is defined by the cultural classification of the archaeological site. This distinction can help you choose places based on the topics that interest you most.
