Lunahuaná brings together a range of travel interests: the Plaza de Armas and a 17th-century church in town, Pisco experiences nearby, and activities in the Valle de Lunahuaná. For your planning, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights—from visiting the town and attending festivals and tastings to enjoying nature and outdoor activities in the valley.

Plaza de Armas and Iglesia Matriz

The Plaza de Armas and the Iglesia Matriz Santiago Apóstol are among Lunahuaná’s tourist attractions. The church dates back to the 17th century and is classified as National Cultural Heritage. One of its distinctive architectural features is its orientation: the frontispiece does not face the square directly, but looks toward it from the side. If you are interested in architectural history, this is a specific point of difference from the usual image of a church whose façade faces the central square.

The Plaza is also a useful landmark for finding your way around town: the municipal tourist information office is located at Plaza de Armas S/N. The square and the church offer two different starting points for a visit to the town—public information and historical heritage.

Festivals, Sopa Chola and Pisco

In the district of Lunahuaná, the Festividad del Señor de los Milagros includes food fairs. The specific format of the fairs may change. Another culinary highlight is the Festival de la Sopa Chola, held at Lunahuaná’s Plaza de Armas. Festival visitors can sample Sopa Chola; details and editions may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the information for the relevant edition.

For wine and Pisco, look to the nearby area: Bodega Santa María is located in the hamlet of Condoray, near Lunahuaná, and is part of the Lima region’s Ruta del Pisco. Visitors can learn about the history and production of its products and sample different wines and Piscos there. Individual packages may change; the bodega offers both an introduction to production and the opportunity to try different products.

Rafting and Activities in the Valley

Canotaje, or rafting, is the most popular activity in Lunahuaná and can be enjoyed year-round. Check river conditions and operator availability before your trip. Routes range from a basic level suitable for most people to intermediate and advanced difficulty levels. This range can help you assess the activity, but it does not mean that every difficulty level is right for everyone; conditions on the routes may also vary.

Mountain biking, trekking and rappelling are also offered in the Valle de Lunahuaná. A canopy course above the Río Cañete is 2,500 meters long and is described as the longest in South America. These experiences take place in the valley and are distinct from the cultural attractions in town. Birdwatching is also available in the valley: red-headed woodpeckers and black-and-white herons may be seen above the Río Cañete. Sightings are not guaranteed.

Viewpoint and Archaeological Site

Nearby, the Mirador Peaña de La Cruz San Juan offers a landscape view of Lunahuaná and the Río Cañete, making it suitable for photos and filming. A festival honoring Saint John is held there every year on June 24. It includes a procession and, the following day, an ascent to the viewpoint’s summit. Program details may change. The fixed date and next-day ascent make this festival a different occasion to plan around than year-round canotaje, for which river conditions and operator availability remain important.

Another excursion leads to the archaeological site of Incahuasi in the hamlet of Paullo, outside town. An asphalt road runs 9.2 kilometers from the Plaza de Armas to the site; the journey takes about 14 minutes, although actual travel time may vary. Incahuasi includes a city, ceremonial courtyards, an Ushnu, a fortress, rooms for soldiers and granaries. Check local access conditions before visiting. The site adds an archaeological focus to the town and valley highlights, and its features offer insight into the layout of the site.
