Atyra’s attractions range from church art and local handicrafts to lush landscapes. The Way of the Cross at Kurusu Cerro is also an annual event.
Church Art and Handicrafts
Iglesia San Francisco de AsĂs is considered a historic and religious landmark in Atyra. Its retablo, a carved altarpiece, was carved in 1580 by Franciscan friars and Indigenous GuaranĂ people. Murals and wood carvings reflect the influence of local artisans and the old missions. The retablo is therefore a historically significant work, while the other decorative features draw attention to local craftsmanship and missionary influences. A report dated November 28, 2024, describes the inauguration of the church’s restoration work.
Outside the church, Paseo Peatonal Indio José is associated with leatherwork, wood carvings and stalls selling local products. The difference lies in the focus: at Iglesia, religious art and the influences of the old missions shape the setting; at Paseo, handicrafts and local products take center stage. In this way, handicrafts add another dimension to Atyra beyond the church and its religious history.
Kurusu Cerro: Tradition and Landscape
The Way of the Cross at Kurusu Cerro was established in 2007 during a Pascua Joven gathering to revive and honor the Franciscan tradition. What began as a community memorial celebration grew into an annual attraction that draws more than 5,000 people. Unlike the works of art, this attraction is tied to recurring editions, making it a separate factor to consider when planning your visit.
Kurusu Cerro is also a densely vegetated area designated as an environmental protection zone. The Way of the Cross and the protected status show two sides of the same place: an annual religious tradition and a landscape with designated protection status. Here, a time-specific event and the lush landscape stand side by side as distinct attractions.
Views and Cultural Sites
Museo Pombero RĂłga is located on Cerro Monte Alto in the Yryvu Keha sector. The museum offers panoramic views from the top of the hill. Guided visits may be available for groups and schools; check in advance whether this type of visit is currently possible. Its location and panoramic views set the museum apart from the art and handicraft attractions around Iglesia and Paseo.
Complejo Marianela hosts spiritual retreats, workshops, seminars and conferences. Its artistic and cultural significance includes works by Paraguayan and international artists and artisans, including works by Roberto Morelli, AlarcĂłn Pibernat, Jorge Von Horoch, Nino Sotelo and Cinthia Stadecker. Marianela is therefore associated with both events and art. If you are interested in a specific event, check its date in advance.
