Tobatí is known in Paraguay as the “capital of handicrafts and ceramics”. This cultural identity offers a clear way to get to know the town: handcrafted works and historical heritage sit alongside a landscape of hills and uneven slopes. This gives you more than one way to plan your trip—from learning about craft processes to enjoying the views and outdoor activities. Which side of Tobatí shapes your stay most depends on whether you are more interested in art and history or in experiencing the landscape.

Handicrafts: finished works and how they are made

At Villa Artesanal, visitors can view and buy handcrafted works by local artisans. The pieces reflect traditional techniques and contemporary creativity. Kamba'i Artesanías offers a different experience: visitors can learn more about how the works are made and talk with the artisans. Kamba'i is part of the Ruta Nacional de Artesanía. This means that finished objects to view and buy offer a different experience from a visit focused on learning about the craft and exchanging ideas with the artisans.

TOBA also organizes workshops and activities that are open to the community and aim to teach and pass on traditional art. The Expo Feria Tobatí takes place every year, especially in October, and showcases handicrafts from Tobatí and other parts of Paraguay. Local works and handicrafts from elsewhere in the country come together there. If the fair is the reason for your trip, it is a good idea to check the specific event dates in advance.

History and religious heritage

The Parroquia de la Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción de Tobatí has a history spanning more than 500 years. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of Tobatí was declared National Historical Heritage in 2006. Its long history and formal recognition offer two different perspectives on the town’s heritage. They complement its handicraft tradition with religious history and give Tobatí a cultural focus beyond its workshops.

Views, hill country and nature-inspired art

The Mirador de Tobatí offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the town; the ascent is equipped with stairs and ramps. Tobatí’s extensive hills and uneven slopes are well suited to adventure activities such as hiking and rappelling, as well as close contact with nature. The Mirador turns your attention to the town and hills, while hiking and rappelling bring the slopes themselves into focus. These offer different ways to experience the landscape: taking in the views or getting active.

Parque Natural Ysypo features life-size animal sculptures made from Ysypo and created by Diego Esquivel and his family. Ysypo is traditionally used to make baskets and furniture. The sculptures offer a large-scale artistic interpretation of this traditional use: the material has been shaped into life-size animal figures. For travelers interested in the connection between handicrafts and art, the park offers something distinctive alongside the workshops and the Expo Feria.
