Veierland is a car-free island with gravel roads winding through hilly terrain, open fields, forests and meadows. The island also offers views of the sea and the skerries. When planning your trip, the ferry connection, trails on the island and the different coastal spots are particularly worth considering.

Getting There and Getting Around

The M/F Jutøya ferry connects Veierland with Tenvik on Nøtterøy and Engø near Sandefjord. Check the current ferry service before you travel. Free bicycles are available to borrow at both ferry terminals on Veierland; availability may vary by season. Veierland is also part of the national cycling routes. If you plan to cycle, check before your trip whether the maps you need are available.

The island can also be explored on foot. Veierland’s hiking trails are well signposted. A local hiking map guide helps you discover the cultural landscape of skerries, forest and farmland; check before your trip whether the map is available.

Pilgrim Trail and Landscape

The historic Tunsbergleden Pilgrim Trail runs through both Veierland and Nøtterøy. It follows the western side of the Oslofjord and offers cultural history, coastal scenery and nature experiences along the way. The trail’s historical connections include traces from the Middle Ages, the Viking Age and the Iron Age. The Tunsbergleden is signposted throughout; check the latest route information before setting out, as route details may change.

Veierland’s landscape alternates between hilly terrain, fields, forest and meadows. Views of the sea and skerries add to the experience. Exploring the island lets you experience its natural and cultural landscapes together. The island trails and the Tunsbergleden offer different points of reference: local hiking trails explore Veierland, while the pilgrim trail also passes through Nøtterøy.

Coastal Spots and Camping

Kjølholmen is a large recreational area with smooth coastal rocks. There are good camping opportunities at Kjølholmen, both on the headland and on a grassy area farther inland. Check local rules and conditions before your trip. Hvervodden is considered Veierland’s best swimming beach and has a beautiful sandy beach. The two places offer different coastal scenery: smooth rocks at Kjølholmen and a sandy beach at Hvervodden.

Museum, Church and Local Life

Rispestua, at Albyveien 23, is Veierland’s local museum. Veierland Church is a long church built in 1905. The island’s maritime history also has a specific location: from the 16th century until the late 19th century, Oslebakksundet served as a harbour for sailing ships. Together, the museum, church and harbour offer different insights into the island’s history, each covering a distinct subject.

Kunstledhytta is located in the old school. The building is divided into accommodation, a gallery and a studio belonging to artists Jacek and Ellen Karlowicz. Check current operating details if you plan to stay overnight. Villa Veierland is a café, shop and garden venue that hosts beer and whisky tastings. Events may vary by season, so it is worth checking the current programme.
